“Almost OK... but...give it a miss”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

When I first got there I thought - what have I done!
I was surprised to find the reception is actually part of the iHop building (so look for the iHop - the hotel is not well signed)
The hotel looks like an old - OLD motel 3 (half the quality of a motel 6) and looks like a cell block with a pool.
The owner/s have obviously tried hard to update the place with a nerdy theme of 80's toys and early gamer memorabilia, along with some retro-modern style furniture in an attempt to prevent you staring at the cell block walls.
The one thing they couldn't do is make the rooms bigger (without tearing it down of course)
They also have failed to get rid of the old smell - something that hit me when I first walked in and almost made me walk out again.
The bathroom, come closet was interesting. The soap had mold growing on it, inside the little cardboard box and my sink didn't have a stopper as well as the faucet handle being too hard to operate.
I know they are trying hard to make it work, but unless you are looking for a "Nerd" experience and missed out on the Pacman era, I would give it a miss

On the upside, iHop has a great breakfast.

Room Tip: get the top floor, heavy foot traffic on the ground floor

I stayed there for 6 days last month.
I checked in with my personal credit card and checked out with company credit card.
When I checked out, they forgot to cancel my personal card.
So, I sent an email 3 weeks ago but I couldn't get any kind of answer so far and it's still holding my card almost for a month. Today I called to the hotel directly but the front just said he can't handle it and request me to call again when his supervisor is there. It's very terrible experience to me.

The Avatar is becoming my hotel of choice in the Silicon Valley. Like all the Joie de Vivre hotels it is a modern make-over of an older motel. It still has a motel feel because of the way it was constructed, but it is also a great little boutique hotel. The rooms are very nicely appointed with modern furniture. The beds are very comfortable. The bathrooms are very small, but after all why do they need to be big? There is a nice work-out facility, a commons room, and two restaurants within 100 feet of the place. It is reasonably quiet, and I felt safe and secure. As a business traveller it is ideal for me. It is well located and has easy access to highway 101. I used to stay at the major chain hotel across the street, but the Avatar takes care of all my needs and is only about 60% as expensive. I will certainly stay here again and I recommend you give it a try.

Room Tip: I think the higher floors are a bit less noisy.

After a long drive, my wife and I decided to stay here and are glad we did. Not the best location, but they make the best of it. Simple, albeit funky rooms, it is a great place that is very quiet and worth the price. A great place to stay for a night.

The Avatar Hotel was really nothing all that special. It's really a decorated motel. The rooms are small to average, the bathrooms need some updating, but the beds were comfortable. There is plenty of parking and a nice "Common Room" with TV's, couches and tables. The staff were professional and courteous. For the price it was a good stay, but really nothing over-the-top special. For groups on a budget, this is a good place. If you want something more upscale, look elsewhere.

Booked my last night in California at this hotel, on my way back from Carmel to San Francisco airpot next morning.
The hotel is one of those 60´s/70´s motor inns, but totally renovated and modern. Very cool look!
Comfortable rooms and bed. Enough outlets for business travelers.
Only remarks are the small bathroom and the windows which are located on the hallway, which means you cannot open the curatins , unless you are a show off!

A friend recommended the Avatar Hotel to me for a recent business trip and it was a great call. If you need to be in that general area, the location doesn't get much more convenient...right off the 101 at Great America Pkwy. The rooms are clean and comfortable and are decorated in a cool, contemporary style. Definitely not your typical hotel furniture. The bed was very comfortable and the room has everything you need...a big flat screen TV, an iPod/iPhone sound dock/alarm clock, and a mini-fridge to boot. The free wi-fi worked well. There is a nice lounge area (called The Commons) with a bunch of TVs, coffee, a couple of electric leather massage chairs (sweet), and a free evening wine happy hour. There is also a small but adequate workout room available 24 hours a day. The staff are excellent. Parking is plentiful and also free. And unlike some of the big hotels, you can get from your room to your car (or visa versa) in seconds; no long elevator ride stopping on every other floor and then having to trek a half mile through the lobby and parking garage. The hotel is attached to an IHOP and adjacent to a Bennigan's, both offer 10% discounts if you're staying at the Avatar. And if you need something more upscale, you can walk across the street to the Marriott and go to Parcel 104. I'll be heading back up to Sunnyvale next month and will be staying at the Avatar again.
