“Good Clams and Mussels by the Bucket - Yum!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

When we want clams or mussels by the bucket this place is so good!!! The broth is perfect. Service is good. Salads before hand and ordering some garlic bread to go with - just perfect.
Full bar on site. Parking is on the lot; it sometimes can get busy here so make reservations especially for the week-ends. Service is friendly and usually good.

“Large portions, big heart, okay, too.”

I was visiting from out of town and friends had no idea where to go to dinner. We were looking for predictable and found By-Th'-Bucket online. It was good. Cheap wine by the glass kept my host happy, the salad was a salad, and the plate of pasta was appropriately huge given prices were Bay Area average--kind of high. Our waitress was engaging, full of good information, and she kept the wine coming. A neighborhood spot -- if you can call Stevens Creek Blvd a neighborhood, and it is -- with friendly staff, a satisfying meal, and you know what you are ordering. Lot to be said for this as San Jose evolves into a city of food carts making their way to store fronts with unpredictable consequences.

“Great casual dining”

Great options for seafood and pasta. We've eaten here several times and never had a bad meal. Make sure you save room for the Mud Pie - definitely big enough to share!

“The place for Italian seafood, right next to auto row”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2014

We went down to By The Bucket right after work on a Friday, with a 545pm reservation. By The Bucket advertises with a buy one get one free coupon in the Thursday eye section of the San Jose Mercury News, good 3-6pm for 7 days.

Getting here is no easy task on a Friday, as seemingly the whole Silicon Valley gets off work early on Fridays, and Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road to 280 south is all backed up with bumper to bumper traffic, even at 5pm.

The parking lot is large, but almost completely filled. Probably the only place where you will see a lot of full size sedans -granny cars of the people born before the Baby Boomers. Well at least no Cadillac sedans like my late father owned.

We get there at exactly 545pm, our reservation time, me in tennis shorts with my $100 Chaco womens size 9 sports sandals, almost identical to the mens sandals, acquired used from the Discovery store.

We have to wait 10 minutes before our table is ready, before a tall shapely, college age blonde shows us our table -an added incentive to lure us old farts come back again, despite what the wife may think.

It is a corner table for 2, with barley enough elbow room, without me having to stick out my feet into the corridor, and trip a passing waitress.

The wife knows which seat I want, and always leaves me the seat with the best view of the overhead TVs showing sports events. And man does this place have plenty of overhead TVs - at least 4 in the main room, 2 in the side room, and a half dozen in the bar area -which is where I would go if it there was much waiting.

The freshly made white bread is hot to the touch, and delicious to the taste -although I always have to remind the waiter to bring butter, not spread.

The wife orders the $25 Sea Bass, with spicy marinara sauce, over risotto and spinach. I get the $23 grilled Salmon in butter sauce with 3 grilled prawns, with mashed potatoes and spinach.

The portion sizes are average -if you want large portions get the pasta dishes here. And the dishes are tasteful, especially the grilled prawns -although they are smaller in size than the last time I was here a few months back.

Service is on the slow side -about 17 minutes -if you order the cedar plank dishes, you will have to wait up to 25 minutes.

This place has a lot of large parties for birthdays and other celebrations, and so the number of available tables is usually limited.

Good ambiance, with plenty of 4 person and 2 person booths, with a bit of privacy, and it would pass as a first date place for you youngsters, despite the presence of a lot of old timers around -the ones who still wear socks with sandals! Looks like a younger crowd in the bar area celebrating Friday happy hour.

After tax, tip and $20 off coupon, we get out of there for $37. We will be back, when we get another coupon.

“Going for years....who hasn't”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

Great food.. My family has been going there for years. Try to go early because there always seems to be a long wait to get in. We like it so much that we give people gift cards if they are having a special occasion or as a thank you. It is a loud spot so I say more of a family resturant
