Owner description: Market Forays offers Locavore Cooking Classes and Culinary Adventures for leisure travelers. Sustainable Team Building Events for Corporate Groups. Private Chef Services. Our classes are built around the freshest seasonal local ingredients, combined with a playful attitude that draws on my French upbringing, enriched by the cuisines of the many countries I have visited and by California's own multicultural richness. The preferences and restrictions of my guests are built into the day's lesson plan to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience. Sample menus can be viewed on the Market Forays website. Classes are hands-on, and a printed recipe guide is provided to each guest. The goal is not to impress you with my skills, it is to help you realize your own abilities. Saturday Market Forays classes begin at 8 in the morning at the harbor, continue on to the farmers market, and then we cook and share a feast. Class wraps up around 3:30 pm. Cost is $145 per person. Private classes available during the week, advance reservation is required.

Laurence is such an engaging and inviting woman.
She instills confidence in the most novice of cooks.
The afternoon and evening with her was an unforgettable and unique experience.
I highly recommend the entire experience.

On a sunny morning in July we met Laurence Hauben, a professional chef, at the fish market on Santa Barbara's wharf. Plying us with fresh croissants, she then selected whole fish and crabs on which to build our midday repast. Then it was on to the Farmers' Market to meet her favorite vendors, learn about produce selection, and obtain more supplies. After a short stop at a specialty cheese shop, we drove to Laurence's home where she put us to work in preparing a lunch from our purchases. We sipped wine, prepared food under her tutelage, strolled the garden, and ate ate ate! It was a wonderful experience and one we've planned to repeat annually with our friends.

Laurence Hoban's Market Forays are a hidden treasure not to be missed; anyone from a kitchen novice to the aficionado is in for a culinary treat. The day begins in the early morning and ends in the late afternoon with participants feasting on the fabulous food they prepared....with wine, of course!! Laurence's classes are small, conversational and everyone participates in preparing the meal.

Santa Barbara is indeed a jewel, but the glow surrounding 'wanna-be' chefs after a full day with Laurence Hauben, renowned chef and food editor, is reason enough to look into this wonderful, well-planned day. Beginning with our trip to the warf to select our own fresh-off-the-boat catch, and a jaunt through the Santa Barbara Farmers Market, and a tasting frenzy at C'Est Cheese, we ended up at Laurence's lovely home to begin our cooking and tasting tasks. With gentle guidance from our charming hostess-chef, we laughed, burned, spilled, munched, chopped and created our way through a relaxing and surprisingly delicious day. Various and assorted wines for the 'guest chefs' didn't hurt us one bit and just might have enhanced the comaraderie among people who were strangers at 8 a.m.! Throughout the day of shopping and cooking, we learned marvelous tips on how to plan, how to shop, and how to prepare the glorious meal we all sat down to admire and enjoy at the end of the afternoon. We left, not only with all the recipes, but with full bellies, and the wonderful glow of having spent a gem of a day, in a jewel of a city. Everything about Market Forays is delicious.

A buddy and I wanted something fun and unique as a Christmas present for our respective spouses. We enjoy travel and food. I did some research and ran across the website for Laurence Hauben’s Saturday Market Forays in Santa Barbara, CA. I emailed her about unique cooking class and adventure. It was the perfect gift. I built a weekend around it and we just completed it last weekend. The four of us stayed in a local B&B. Laurence had prepared a menu based on our input of what we preferred. We would shop with her during the morning and then go to her home and prepare the meal. We would then sit at her dining room table and enjoy the fruits of our labor together with locally selected wines by Laurence. The adventure started Saturday morning at the harbor. We met Laurence (a chef from France) there where she explained about fish and shell fish. We selected a fish, had it filleted and off we went to the Farmer’s Market. The Santa Barbara Farmers Market is spectacular. She knows just about every vendor. We tasted, sampled and compared for almost two hours. Fruits, vegetables, olive oils, fresh made butters, honeys, cheeses and others I cannot even remember. We then went to the gourmet chocolate shop, the cheese shop and the bakery. Back to her home and for the next 2 ½ hours, we helped prepare food and enjoy local wines. We then shared in our 6 course lunch with 4 different wines. We are already planning to do it again.
