“Pretty darn good”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Pros:
Great location, very walkable
Great staff
Loved the details/decor of room
Good AC
Nice balcony area
Good wifi
Nice sized room, large TV

Cons:
Breakfast area small
breakfast a bit limited
Very limited parking, at $12
Bed was kind of squishy soft and bouncy. Prefer a firm bed.

I would stay here again!

Room Tip: There is no swimming pool, but the hotel does allow you to borrow bikes and games, which is nice.

Thank you for taking the time to share the positive experience you had at our hotel. Our staff is always eager to hear from happy guests. In the coming weeks we will be adding more variety and new items to our breakfast selection. We also recently renovated our second floor balcony to add additional breakfast seating. In regards to parking we do have valet available during busy hours when our lot fills up quickly. Thank you again for taking the time to post your comments and concerns. We stayed only one night in Santa Barbara (wish we had stayed for longer!) and picked this hotel, despite one or two negative comments by previous reviewers. We were totally happy with the hotel and the very good service we received from the staff. The hotel is sitauted right in the middle of downton Santa Barbara and amongst all the bars, restaurants and shops. The beach and pier is only 10 mins walk away, which is just one straight road! Our room was on the slighly smaller size compared to American room sizes, but was perfectly adequate for us. This hotel is very reasonably priced and I would highly recommed this hotel and Santa Barbara to anyone.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are better, as you can hear some street noise.

We were staying at a 4 star property nearby and having a very
unpleasant stay. I called the Holiday Inn Express and spoke with
Kris on the front desk. It was hours before check in and I needed
2 rooms. Kris called me back within 10 min. & said they had
1 room ready. Kris said "see your days getting better already." Excellent job!
Austin a valet outstanding, Jake front desk wonderful, Derek in the
dining room made our stay! Who ever hired & trained these people did an amazing job. Christine Yee

Hotel has charm with brick walls in the rooms. The rooms are a little smaller but they do have double pane windows, fridge, table and chairs, and pretty good beds. Staff is friendly and made some great recommendations. Walking distance to everything. Stayed one night but will go back.

We were worried about booking a room in this hotel because we don't usually stay at HI Express. However, for a trip where we just needed a good night's sleep and good bathroom this fit the bill. The bed was surprisingly comfortable and the free breakfast was good. If you don't wat to pay $600 a night in Santa BArbara, stay here.

Stayed here over Mother's Day weekend for a one-night's stay.

The Pros
-Centrally located, lots of places to walk to nearby
-Doesn't have a two-night stay minimum
-Vending and ice machines nearby
-The breakfast spread in the morning isn't too shabby. I helped myself to some coffee, fruit and cinnamon bun when I left, but they had a ton of stuff!

The Cons
-Rooms facing the street are loud, my sister-in-law requested a room change that faced the back and it was not as bad.
-Very limited parking, they have valet service, but when my brother-in-law got his car back someone had clearly STEPPED on the hood and done damage to it overnight. Where do they park these cars???
-I was going to iron a pair of white pants, but when I pulled out the iron it was covered in some sort of red stuff that looked like it would have ruined my pants if I tried to iron it.

I would probably stay here again but only because of the convenience. I'm sure there are other budget options that are better.

Room Tip: Avoid any rooms facing the street.

It's called Hotel Virginia in large letters on the front, which is a bit confusing if you're driving around looking for a Holiday Inn. Apart from that it's easy to find from the Pacific Coast Highway.

We spent 3 nights here and found it very good. We'd asked for a quiet room and got one; check-in and out was very straightforward; all the staff were very friendly and helpful; you get a free local daily newspaper. There's a nice balcony on the 2nd floor where you can sit with a glass of something, or your breakfast. Two car parks at $12 per night. It's also an historic building.

It's a couple of minutes' walk from the main street, and about 10 -15 from the beach, wharf and station. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby to suit all pockets and tastes.

Our only slight gripe was all the disposable tableware at breakfast - real cups, plates and cutlery would have made me give it 5 stars. But they do have an impressive pancake-making machine!

Room Tip: As the hotel is on a fairly main road, if you don't want traffic noise all night ask for a quiet...

Dear RoseR23,
Thank you for writing a review about your recent stay with us. We strive to give great service to all of our guests and it makes us happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I'm glad you got the chance to explore downtown Santa Barbara. In regards to the disposable tableware at breakfast, because we are a historic property we do not have the kitchen space for real plates. We are however making the switch from styrofoam to recycled paper tableware. We hope to see you next time you visit the area.
