My wife and I chose this hotel as our "home base" for our wedding in Santa Barbara. I stayed here for nearly a week, and we had 30-40 guests at the hotel over our wedding weekend. It is a lovely place, and about as well-located in Santa Barbara as possible. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the rooms and common areas are clean and well-maintained. Customer service is excellent. Will definitely return.

The walls of this hotel are very thin and voices are easily heard through the walls. My son's room was next door with his bathroom sharing a wall with our bathroom. I could easily hear his conversations through the wall. There was also a small child on the second floor who we think must have been running up and down the long hallway. It sounded like she was right in our room with us. Also, the trash is collected on Friday morning and our room was on the side of the large parking lot where the trash bins are located. We were abruptly jarred awake when the large trash truck came into the lot to empty the bins.
On a plus side, the employees are great. They were accommodating and pleasant. They handed out water, gave discount coupons and they were able to answer any question asked of them.
Also, the location was great. Easy walking distance to many very good restaurants and shopping and the shuttle stop was right at the corner.

My wife and I stayed overnight in this downtown hotel on West Haley. It must be noted that this was the original Hotel Virginia built in 1916, and is classified as a heritage site by the US government. It is an L-shaped building where the corner of the L is an extremely narrow and short arched driveway leading into an inner parking lot. Exiting the lot and driveway requires caution due to pedestrians crossing behind 2 blind corners. Service was attentive and professional. We were given the end room of the annex which is accessible only by exiting the lobby and crossing the parking lot. The first thing that greets you when you enter the annex is the laundry room. I'm guessing that this annex was originally the servants' quarters or the stables. Our room was European standard, i.e., cramped. It was clean but nothing more. It had a couple of small windows that looked out onto the corner of the parking lot (view of the bike rack with the hotel bicycles). There is no fitness center. Coupons entitling the guest to free entry to a public pool a couple of kilometres away are available. When I went to check out the lap pool, there was a line of swimmers waiting for available lanes. The public pool has ridiculously short hours. The hotel had its usual Holiday Inn Express complimentary breakfast. The outstanding value of this hotel is its location. If staying in downtown close to Cabrillo blvd is not important to you, I would skip this almost $200/night old hotel.

We stayed here for one night with our 2 kids. Parking the car, checking in went like a breeze. We were offered complementary water, maps, wifi without asking. Great service. Hotel is 10m walking from the (not so nice) beach area. Main street is around the corner. Good beds, small but all-you-need bathroom.

We stayed one night at the HI Express SB en route to LAX. What a lovely little hotel! The building dates from 1926 and has much more character than a modern HIX building. The room was spacious with a very acceptable bathroom and lots of nice touches (free bike hire, bottled water, coffee available all day etc). All the staff very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast is the standard HIX meal - nothing amazing but built into the room price and fills a hole more than adequately. But the best part of this hotel is the location; three blocks to the beach and literally steps to State Street - lively shops and restaurants. SB itself is also a very pleasant town with heaps to do and see; we definitely plan to return for longer than one night.

My boyfriend and I decided to have a 1 night staycation downtown and chose Holiday Inn Express for its prime location. We knew we would want to go to dinner and do some bar hopping/clubbing and diddnt want to need a cab.
The rooms were on the small side but we diddnt need more space, and they were clean and had all the amenities we needed.
They manage parking very well for being right on State street with both valet and off street parking.
We had a great time and plan on doing another "trip" to this hotel soon.

Thank you for your positive review! I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed your room and the amenities we offer. We do have a great location for both local attractions and downtown nightlife. On your next trip you should walk or take our bikes to the courthouse, the tower gives a great view of the city! We hope to see you next time you're in the area.

My boyfriend and I just stayed for a quick weekend get away and we really had a good time. The location was great because we didn't have to drive anywhere all the bars, shops, restaurants were within walking distance (they also have bikes you can use at the hotel). The rooms were pretty average a little on the nicer side. The bed was super comfy and the staff were all very helpful and polite (I believe the guy helping us was Jason). I read some reviews about there being a lot of homeless people on state street and there were quite a few but they kept to themselves. Overall it's a good place to stay with good prices. I would definitely stay again.
