“Idyllic Relaxation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2012

Every detail is well thought out here. Before arriving they made sure that every request for our trip was taken care of down to pillows, newspapers and any reservations. We stayed for our anniversary and we arrived to a great bottle of wine and a lovely card . Everyday we enjoyed the property and felt as if we were the only guests. Breakfast came to our patio each morning with every newspaper you could imagine. Each night a little treat was left in our room that was not your typical chocolate on the pillow. The mini bar was stocked with gourmet snacks, water and soda that were complimentary. Dinner at the Stonehouse terrific as well and drinks by Pedro in the bar awesome. We laughed at the pool because it seemed like a library; everyone wanted to relax so no one was talking above a whisper. YES this is a pricey property however the experience is priceless.

San Ysidro Ranch is a little piece of heaven. From the moment we checked in, I couldn't wait to take a hike and breathe in the clean mountain air and then sit in the jacuzzi amidst the trees. We turned on the fire and also enjoyed the massage therapists come to our room for a relaxing couples massage. Oh and don't let me forget the wonderfully relaxing bath I took in the beautiful tub before heading down to the restaurant for a casual but perfect evening with good wine and great company.

Room Tip: Head up to the trees and hide away in the forest. Walk in the gardens in the morning.

Lots of local recommendations for this venerable instituon of a hotel in an almost spiritually beautiful location. We were in Pine and found it ideally located for everything we wanted. Food is fantastic, cocktails well made with an extensive wine list and the service impeccable. A special ocassion location if ever there was one. You go there knowing it's going to be expensive but the standard practice does seem to emulate late 90's defense industry...not everything deserves to cost so much! Overall, though, a wonderful experience; a real gem tucked away close to urban Santa Barbara. P. S. if you like firm pillows, take one with you!

This is a first class property, in a beautiful, secluded setting. We had stayed here before, and ended up getting married there. The rooms have character, the service is great, and it's the perfect place to have a relaxing get away.
Minor issue is some of the rooms need some fresh paint and minor touch ups. Less minor issue was wedding planning. Given the property and the accompanying pricing, it was surprising how poor their wedding "coordinator" did with communication, follow through, answering questions, etc. Everything ended up fine, but much more because of my wife's diligence than their help.

5 stars because most people aren't going there to get married :)

My new husband and I went for the first two nights of our honeymoon last month, and we can't say enough good things about this place. We've already resolved to make an anniversary trip back, hopefully many times.

It is romantic, beautiful, classic, understated, unfussy. It's just glorious. The citrus trees, eucalyptus, jasmine, and lavender hit your nose the moment you pull up. The canyon is green and there are great views of the Pacific and the Channel Islands. The rooms are perfect, with comfortable four-poster beds, antique furniture, and charming blue-and-white china and Oriental rugs. I wanted it to be my home!

We went on a Monday and there weren't many other people staying there, although many came in to the restaurants for dinner. The staff was courteous and warm and we knew we could ask anything of them--in fact we did ask someone to come up and take a photo of us at our cottage and they happily obliged--but they considerately never bothered us. It felt like our private property--with an incredible staff and amenities.

Put it on your list of places to visit before you die.

Room Tip: I recommend (as many others have) splurging for a cottage room, to have two private outdoor spaces...

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2012

We’ve stayed at the San Ysidro Ranch three times in the last year, and something extremely upsetting happened on our last stay.

We went there three times, trying to re-cature our first time experience last year. A hotel like this should be able to accommodate our special needs for physical disabilities – they were able to meet them once. Within the last two visits, especially our last one, things went wrong and worse. We had to cut our last visit short.

From the time we booked, through our last trip, their reception was cold, snotty, and indifferent. This time, they didn’t even offer to take our luggage into the room. Who is presiding over customer service here, that they allow nearly the entire staff to be rude and arrogant?

Upon arrival, our room reeked of chlorine bleach. We asked to see other rooms, and were told they would see if there was anything available. We stayed in the room to wait for them to come back. No-one ever came back or called the room. We finally found that running the fireplace got rid of most of the smell, but not completely. I had to call the office, and were only then told that they were sold out, and so we couldn’t see other rooms until later. We decided to make the best of it.

Having asthma (and the staff knowing well beforehand that we could not tolerate strong odors), the staff made no effort to make things better for us. After a few days, we demanded to see other rooms that didn't smell. After three rooms that smelled only worse than the first with a very strong room-freshener smell, we finally landed on a room that was nearly fragrance-free. I spoke with guest services, and the manager would not speak to me. The new room was more expensive than the one we were in. They offered only to move us to the new room, and charge us more money for it, even though it was available for the entire time (no prior reservations for it), and they had obviously done something to our original room that made it uninhabitable for anyone, whether you had asthma or not.

When you pay this much for a room (never mind that we were going to stay for two weeks!), you expect staff and management to go out of their way to be pleasant, helpful, and understanding. With just a couple of exceptions, nothing could have been further from this expectation. Instead, we were met with rudeness and nasty behavior, as if we had done something wrong, or were being too much trouble.

What we want to know is: what is the San Ysidro Ranch covering up? What’s wrong with their rooms that they need to make them stink so strong from either perfume or chlorine? Something’s very wrong at the Ranch.

One more tip: food is ordinary at best. The restaurants provide strictly pre-fabricated, by-the-numbers fare. No originality, and quite frankly, very plebeian, AND very expensive!

Needless to say, we won’t be going back to San Ysidro. If you actually enjoy getting attitude from hotel staff, and having special requests ignored and sneered at, then you’ll like San Ysidro Ranch. If, however, you expect to get what you pay for, you better pick someplace else.

We take any constructive and legitimate sentiments expressed by our guests in a serious, thoughtful way. On a very rare occasion, our resort may not be suitable for a particular set of needs. We of course regret that, but promise to redouble our efforts to ensure wonderful visits for all of our guests.

Sincerely,
