Unlike some of the reviews I read, I found this hotel to be clean and comfortable. I booked this hotel for 2 rooms and 5 nights before reading any of the reviews and was ready to cancel it after I read the reviews. Luckily I did not cancel. We arrived to find a nice looking hotel with an elevator and very clean, comfortable rooms and grounds. The cleaning staff did not speak english, but that didn't make a difference in keeping the rooms clean. As with any hotel, there could be improvements (like breakfast), but our upper rooms over the pool were very comfortable. Unlike the reviews, I did not find the plumbing or the rooms to be noisy. All in all, a very nice stay.

These people are incompetent.
When we arrived, they had lost our reservation.
Then they walked us into a room with sleeping people
in it.
Afterwards it was impossible to get a receipt for reimbursement.
THis has been a nightmare.

We were looking for a way to celebrate my 50th birthday, and without having ever been to Santa Barbara, we booked this room based on the information we received from a tourbook. They described it as a 3 star small scale hotel. We beg to differ. Although the hotel was the winner of the landscaping award, the back entrance of the motel we were given to enter our room was dirty and junky. There was a male neighbor across the 4 foot trashed fence just yards from our door who watched us more than once as we entered the room. The room was dark, dirty and had a musty odor. There were what appeared to be blood stains on the lamp shade and cob webs on the ceiling. The window was broken (although the manager fixed the problem we did not feel we could open or close the window) and had bars over the window. This window was also within yards of the neighbor's house. The water pressure was poor and the sink plumbing was uncovered. There was no restaurant on the premises. When we asked to cancel our reservation we were told we would have to forfeit the $234.08 we paid for the room. There are many other better motels closer to the beach with better views and a better price.

  • Liked — Only had to stay one night
  • Disliked — The dirty, dark, junky room and the entrance.

The place is cute and well manicured, but make sure you get a room upstairs and not by the pool. It was our anniversary and I asked a room with a view. The clerk said there wasn't really a view from the hotel, but she would put me in a front room facing the street. This would have been quite lovely, however, when we checked in, our room faced the pool, not the street. The pool hours are until 10pm and we usually go to sleep early, so this was not good. The hotel checked in
a bus load of teenagers the first night and they were all in the pool
until 10pm and slamming doors all night long. Our room was off a long
hallway and other hotel guests would stand in the hallway and talk and, again, the slamming of doors. If somebody took a shower, the plumbing was very loud and sounded like the pipes were in the walls right next to our bed. Our last night there was impossible to sleep between the pool noise, slamming doors and somebody taking a shower at 3:30am. UGH!

It was one of the only hotels left on a holiday weekend that had a room available at the last minute. We stayed in a room that was close to the outdoor stairs so there was lots of noise from other hotel stayers. The rooms were small, old, and the refrigerator made noise. The room was not that clean and we had to get our own wash clothes the second day. The continental breakfast could have been better. I would have liked to enjoyed it better for $200 a night. The people at the hotel were nice and it was nice to have a 24 hours front desk for late arrival.

Santa Barbara was gorgeous!

I spent a restful night at the Mason Beach Inn--restful enough that I slept a couple hours later than I usually do! The street and the hotel were quiet, especially on the night after the holiday.

It is true that the hotel is walking distance from Amtrak, I walked it with a heavy suitcase. It's also walking distance from downtown, though the downtown is a good mile long and it can get to be far from the far end of downtown. During the day, there's an electric bus up and down State St. every 10 minutes, but it inexplicably quits at 6:00 p.m. After that there's no transit on the beach side of the freeway, except on weekends.

My second floor room was plenty big, clean, quiet, well lit, had a comfortable bed. I was surprised to get charged 75c for a directory assistance call when local calls are free, but it's less than my cell phone would have charged. The bathtub was short and uncomfortable, with a nasty little lip at the back. All in all perfectly fine. I got no feeling of excessive security as some previous reviewers have. The door from an outside stairway to the second floor hallway required a card key to open, but that seemed like an acceptable precaution.

Santa Barbara is promoting "car free" visits, and it can be done, particularly if you're willing to walk, or pay for cabs at night. The desk clerk when I came in seemed acquainted with train-based arrivals--asked if the train was on time (it was).

The property is close to the beach and located in a quiet neighborhood. Our room was clean and pleasant but small and the bathroom was cramped. On the internet the room rates were $107.00 to $189.00. Our stay was $229.00 for Saturday because it was a holiday weekend and it really wasn't worth the price. We found the lady desk clerk sleeping when we went down to ask for an extra blanket because we were cold. She was disoriented and couldn't find the key to the linens so we went without. The next day the young gentleman behind the desk gave us the wrong directions. As long as you don't stay there on a holiday weekend and you don't need anything from the desk personell you will be okay. :)
