“Be careful of old vs. new rooms”
Reviewed August 13, 2005

I had stayed at the Lemon Tree in the past where we had a room in the newer building. We really enjoyed the view of the gardens and were quite happy with the room. However on this visit we were given one of the old rooms. (There is a newer building and an older building). It was very small, dingy, wth a small window looking out onto the parking lot. When I asked to be moved to the newer building I was told it would be an additional $30 from the agreed upon rate. (I made the reservation directly through the hotel). To their credit, when I balked at having to pay the additional $30, they gave me the room for the same rate. I would have no problem with recommending this hotel with the condition that you MAKE SURE you have a room in the newer building. If given a room in the older building, I would recommend you try somewhere else.

After being turned away at the sister motel, the Orange Tree Inn down the road, they referred us to the Lemon Tree. The front desk staff was wonderful, however, the room was really not very impressive for the price. We had to share a balcony, which should have been mentioned when we checked in.

For $175 a night, we really should have had a private balcony or one of the garden views. The room was closed off, in the corner and they made a big deal about being close to the elevator. Big deal!

have stayed at the lemon tree and sister hotel the orange tree on several occasions over the years and have never had a problem of any kind
the new section at the lemon tree is quite an improvement to the aging but remodeled old part this oaisis is in the center of town is convenient to everything staff was more than friendly and did everthing to make our stay comfortable and private the orange tree is a bit closer to night life and you can walk back to the hotel if need be after a night of fun on the town

This is a well-located, reasonably priced motel with very pretty gardens and a decent restaurant.
For nearly 5 years we have traveled to Santa Barbara from Oakland nearly once a month and almost always chose to stay at the Lemon Tree. But no matter how often we stayed, they always treated us like strangers and never once exhibited a welcoming attitude. We would often mention how often we stayed and would basically get the cold shoulder in return. Other hotels we stayed in just once before would remember us and welcome us like friends. Finally, we began to notice the rooms getting run down, soiled carpets and the final straw was malfunctioning plumbing that caused the shower to alternate hot/cold blasts. When we complained their attitude was as unconcerned as ever. That was the last time we stayed there almost a year ago and we will not stay there again.
Disenchanted.
