“Happy I chose over Biltmore Four Seasons for Family Vacation”
Reviewed March 4, 2009

My husband and I just spent 3 nights at the Harbor View Inn with our almost 2 year old and my mother. I had originally booked a suite at the Biltmore Four Seasons, but feeling too guilty about the spending that much money I cancelled the Four Seasons and got 2 rooms at the Harbor View and saved about $700 (even with the 3rd night free at the Four Seasons). With my Four Seasons dreams dashed, I was prepared to be disappointed with the Harbor View Inn but I was pleasantly surprised. In the end I think it was actually better for our family trip than the Four Seasons b/c the location was great and we could easily walk to Stearns Wharf, along the beach, to some nice parks, the great zoo and all over Santa Barbara whereas the Montecito area is more a resort area and you can't walk to all the waterfront locations. We were also lucky to get 2 adjoining king ocean view rooms and they brought a crib in for our daughter. The rooms were spacious and well kept. One caution is that our 2 rooms were the same rate and described the same but one room (301) had a large bathroom with sunken tub and walk in shower and the adjoining room (302) had a much smaller standard bathroom. It worked out fine for us, but the rooms seem to vary in size and set up, so make sure to check out your room and ask to see others if you are not happy. The staff was very accomodating and friendly -- when housekeeping forgot to bring us a few things the front desk staff made everything right quickly and apologized. The front desk staff was helpful with restuarant and activity recommendations. The restaurant Eladio's and the coffee shop on site were decent and had kids options. I was actually most impressed with the Spa at the hotel. They had a great winter special with a 50 minute message for $55. I was able to get in on an hour's notice and the newly renovated spa was as nice as many 5 Star hotel spas and Red Door spas I have visited. They have a great whirlpool and sauna behind the spa that anyone can use any time and I was alone there when using it. I would say that while this is not the 5 star Four Seasons, it is a very solid 4 star hotel in a great location and it is a very nice slightly more affordable alternative for families wanting to stay in Santa Barbara.

We've stayed at the Harbor View Inn many times and really enjoyed it. This time we tried to book an ocean view suite for a lovely family holiday and they will not allow our two children in the suite. It's a ridiculous policy - one that they should review. They've now lost our business.

We appreciate your comments regarding our suites and would like to clarify why we are unable to accommodate a family of four in these particular rooms.
Our suites are to be used in “honeymoon” fashion, (whereby they sleep two people) and are simply not large enough to accommodate two rollaway beds/cribs in that it becomes a fire hazard.
We are happy to accommodate families in guest rooms with 2 queen beds, adjoining rooms with king/queen combinations or a suite with a room in close proximity with a king or two queen beds.
We hope this helps to shed light on how best we can accommodate families and that we are, in fact, family-friendly.

We stayed for 5 nights, first visit to Santa Barbara. Our room was an ocean front king on the 3rd floor, good view of the beach and Stearns Wharf with still some privacy from the street and beach. The room was quite spacious and comfortable. We would have used a refrigerator, we did not use the minibar. The in room security box used a removable key lock which did the job but was less convenient than the electronic code ones. The hotel staff was very helpful with information about the area and activities. We ate at the hotel restaurant for 2 breakfasts and one dinner, food and service were quite good and the 20% discount for hotel guests was a nice plus. The hotel location is convenient to walk along the waterfront, wharf and to State street restaurants and shops. Free self parking at the hotel was very handy. Wehne we prepared to leave, the front desk guy even provided bubble wrap and a box to transport our souvenir wine tasting glasses safely home on the plane. We would definitely stay here again.

I must say The Harbor View Inn was one of the amazing hotels i ever stayed in. I stayed here for 1 week in July in 2008 and 2007. The staff was exceptional. They were so helpful and always checking if we needed anything. We stayed here after visiting Las Vegas, and to be honest it was a much appreciated change. The hotel was spotless and the rooms were big and luxurious. Unlike the majority of hotels the hotel restaurant was extremely reasonable and lovely food with a great selection. Even though we stayed there during high season the hotel never became overrun and we could always get sun beds down at the pool. The small gym beside the pool area was small but had everything you needed. The beach was right accross the road and the charming town was only a 5min walk away, perfect location to loads of restaurants and shops.I will definitely be visiting Santa Barbara and this beautiful hotel again.

We booked a room here through Travelocity. When we got to the hotel they did not have a reservation for us -- Travelocity completely messed up! The hotel staff set in motion right away to find us a room. They were sold out that night and only had one room where the A/C wasn't working. We went to check it out and it was fine, in fact, LOVELY. We took the room, they gave us a better rate than Travelocity (who never did ANYTHING to help us in this situation), sent us up a bottle of champagne AND treated us to brunch at the hotel restaurant the next day. Never have we received such wonderful, kind service! And the hotel is GREAT!!!

The hotel has an excellent location just across from the historic pier and ocean. We selected the ocean view room and were not disappointed with the slight increase in price. It was very clean and modern. My wife also enjoyed the spa located within the hotel, it has a hot tub and sauna available for clients to use after their services. I highly recommend this hotel.

On a drive from Vegas to San Francisco, myself and my partner dropped in here on spec. We figured we'd start near the top of the tree and let that be our benchmark in terms of what we were prepared to pay during off season. We were greeted by a really helpful guy at reception who gave us a room for $195 which we figured for good value. The decor of the common areas of the hotel is a bit Golden Girls set but the rooms are huge and tastefully decorated. Having come from the rip-off and soulessness that was Vegas, this was a real breath of fresh air. All the staff in the hotel, including the cleaning staff were cheery and helpful. I believe prices in summer are prohibitive (fair enough) but we got great value for money. The only gripe I would have relates to the attitude of one of the staff members in the adjoining restaurant. It was literally contemptuous. He didn't even look up from using his phone as we left the cheque. All we got was a grunt. No matter - overall the experience rated very highly.
