“Pretty with room for improvement”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2014

Really pretty hotel, VERY good service, rooms average though very clean. Great location by the water, and walkable to State Street while maintaining a resort feel. Competition for lounge chairs caused a heated poolside argument - which was the natural outcome of a scarce resource - why so few chairs for such a big place? Seems like they could easily expand the pool deck area into the adjacent grassy area and add a couple rows of lounge chairs to take care of that - it really needs to be done. Basketball "court" was in the parking lot and there were cars parked there, so there went that idea. And they only had 2 racquets for tennis - really?? And an up-charge for wifi in the room rubs me the wrong way, as does a parking fee. So, yes, a nice place with room for improvement.

Shower / bathroom was about the quality of a $150 hotel in LA. Furniture in room was super old. Wifi was extremely slow. The room is not worth $684... it had a balcony and ocean view but still not even close to something you could charge $684 for. Asked for towels in the morning, they didn't come. Our room didn't get serviced...sheets were dirty when we came to the room to sleep. Hotel was loud it's right on the main street in santa barbara. The beds were terrible...can't believe the room cost so much.

Stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed the hotel. Only downside was the shortage of restaurants/variety of food. One of the two restraints they had was closed for 2 of the nights, so we ate in the bar, which was fine.

Reception service was good and so was the bar. Coffee shop women needed some work, as she was miserable through out our stay. We made a point of telling her, which just brought on more grunts.

We stayed at Fess Parker for two days, two adults and two kids. The hotel has a pretty impressive main area, and a really beautiful outdoor space. The pool is decent size, and was not to crowded when we were there. But the rooms are not nice. When we came, the air condition was turned off, and the room had an unpleasant smell. The room was pretty spacious, but the interior is old and out of date. This could be tolerated if the maintenance was good, but it's not. Door handles which is closed to fall off, crack in paint everywhere, and just a hotel room in general bad shape. The air condition had a movement sensor, so when no one was moving, it turned itself off. Genius...So at night, legs where flying up in the air to get the sensors to start the AC again. There might be a function to this that we didn't get, but how about leaving a manual then? We considered a couple of three stars hotels before choosing The Fess Parker. You might as well save your bucks and go for a cheaper three stars.

Thank you for taking the time to revewi your stay at the resort. We appreciate your compliments but we were sorry to learn that your guestroom did not meet your expectations and you experienced challenges with the air conditioning system. Ok so I was really looking forward to staying here for a bit of luxury, over the period of a family wedding we were attending in Santa Barbara.
We were directed to the room (which we eventually located) and found that there was no 5th bed, but a quick phone call to receiption saw a roll away being brought to the room. We also had to ask for extra towels, and each day the maid only left enough coffee and cups for two people. She also did not take away dirty used glasses which whilst small should not have happened in a hotel of this standard.
We went down to the pool area which was nice but very small in comparison to the size of the hotel, now I appreciate that the ocean is just across the road but for those who prefer the pool you really had to be down early to get a bed, although the free towels provided was a welcome touch.
The prices for the pool bar was very expensive but that seemed to be standard for the Fess Parker.
The rooms were nice but I felt the whole place was a little dated espcecially not being able to get WIFI in the room without paying for it, and only being able to get connected in one spot in the lobby.
The balcony only had two seats and no outside light for sitting out at night. Small things but still with the hotel rating not something you would expect to happen.
When we checked out we mentioned these issues and got the price of our car parking taken off the bill. Which was something but not really enough on relfection.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the sea as opposed to a garden view.

We stay at the Fess Parker each year due to the location. This year we stayed in a suite. The room was nice enough, and for a suite pretty reasonable, though generally the hotel is pretty expensive compared to the value. The room was fine and the bathroom was excellent for a room this size. The pool is not heated and can be a bit cold at first, but our kids eventually warmed up to it. The best part of the Fess Parker is the location right off the beach. It is convenient to just about everywhere and has large spacious grounds. The worst part is that it is located right next to the train tracks and several times a day and at night the train will blast through with a horn that is loud enough to wake up depending on the room you are staying in. I have always found the serve to be good at the hotel, thought not at the top of the hilton list. I am a Diamond member and this to me in in the top half of their resort style hotels. The biggest problem with the stay is that they shut the water off from 1 until 4 for repairs one day. The water in the building was off longer than that and then the next morning, without warning, it was also off. The challenge is Santa Barbara is finding a nice hotel on the beach. We continue to come back here because it is a Hilton property and we are familiar with it, but it is not a property where we absolutely feel like we would go to if we were in another location.

Room Tip: Stay away from the backside of the building. Pay extra to face the ocean and avoid the train noises...

When we checked in we asked for a quiet room. The desk clerk recommended the 3rd floor room because there would be no one above us. What he neglected to say was that #337 in the Camellia Bldg. was just across the parking lot from a train track. We heard the train going by as we were unpacking but when we called the front desk to move, even if it meant we would pay for an upgrade, the hotel was fully booked.
