“Gem in quiet neighborhood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2014

I live in Santa Barbara and rented a suite for my son and I to stay in during his visit here. This sweet place is off the beaten path. Close to the main hospital in a quiet Santa Barbara neighborhood. The room they gave me was a 2 story townhouse suite with a private garden patio at a rate you would pay for a lot of single motel rooms Santa Barbara. It is a short drive to anywhere you'd want to be and on the bus line. The staff were exceptionally nice! The rooms had been recently remodeled.
I would have given it 5 stars except that there was no fitness room, the stairs were a bit steep and the TV (if you watch) is blocked by sofa arm. Sometimes you might hear the helicopter coming to/from the hospital. This was not the case when we stayed there though. I will be referring friends here from now on.

Stayed here for two nights with our family of 6. It was close to both downtown and the Mission via a short drive, but not particularly close to the beach. That was okay for us since we weren't in Santa Barbara for a beach getaway. They had a terrific two-bedroom unit with 3 queen beds that fit our family perfectly. The kitchen and living room allowed us to save some money on meals. The room was clean and well-appointed, with a large bathroom.

This sprawling older complex is within a block's walk of Cottage Hospital, and also convenient to Cottage Hospital Rehabilitation and Mission Terrace Assisted Living. That is the main object of the facility and if you are visiting the hospital, do tell them for a substantial discount in room rate. The minus in location is that there are no markets close bye, so if you stay in one of their kitchenette rooms, you will need to drive for milk. Back on the plus side, there is Pete's coffee on route to the hospital, and McConnell's Ice Cream parlor not far away. Don't miss the latter, it is a SB institution with some very unique flavors including the extraordinary cinnamon ice cream!

We stayed at the Encina for about 2 weeks while attending a relative at the hospital. We never quite knew when my relative would be released, so kept having to lengthen our stay. As a result, we changed rooms several times. The Encina is an older hotel, once privately owned by a physician who wanted a place close bye the hospital for clients and their relatives. It has a great deal of charm with its variety of buildings, courtyards, green touches of mature landscaping and a finch aviary. In each room the beds were more than adequate, the linens of high quality, and the towels large and fluffy. Robes were supplied.

First we stayed in a 2 bed at the back, on De la Vina street, and it was a bit dated, as mentioned elsewhere, but comfortable enough if you don't plan on staying in your room but to sleep. It did smell a bit musty at first, but seemed clean. We then moved to another 2 bed closer to the center which had been updated and felt a bit cleaner. My favorite room was one of the Apartments (#308), also on De la Vina street. Again, the furniture was a bit dated, but the kitchen clean, and cutlery, dishes, etc. supplied were sufficient. You will need to get a key from the front desk for access to the kitchen supplies. The room had a private patio we took advantage of, though most of the apartments shared a larger courtyard. Both rooms on De la Vina had some road noise, but not too much after 10pm.

Finally, we moved to what they call a townhouse, 2 bedrooms up, and living, kitchen down. Though slightly quieter (from road noise) facing Bath St, the townhouse was not as comfortable as the apartment, the bathroom was old, and the kitchen more worn. All in all, the apartments seemed the best deal having 3 beds and a large living room to put a 4th person, if all singles.

In our stay, we spent a lot of time speaking with the front desk to arrange changes in our stay. They were very helpful, courteous, and kind. I felt they genuinely did their best to work with our changing demands for rooms. Be warned, they are typically full during the summer months, but cancellations are common midday as people are released from the hospital earlier than anticipated. I ate in the restaurant one time, and it was good, though the wine selection was a bit bare considering the proximity to wineries. I never used the pool, but it looked popular with children. If you are a lap swimmer, you may be dismayed at the size and business. The hot tub looked a bit dirty due to aging glass tiles of an era long gone, though the water was fine. There is a small weight room with treadmill and a few machines. My only complaint was that they only issue one parking pass per room and our party had multiple cars. The extras had to park (not far away) in the hospital parking structure which is free with validation if you are a legitimate hospital visitor. So really only a minor inconvenience.

Room Tip: Apartments are a better deal than Townhouses with more beds. Traffic noise slightly greater on De l...

We would highly recommend this hotel! It is in a quiet and easy location. Staff is wonderful. Rooms clean, quiet, large and comfortable. Most parking is covered and large enough for our SUV. Late check out was wonderful. Surrounding residential area quiet and safe to walk/run in the morning. We will be staying here again!

Excellent staff, caring, helpful, available, no one sitting around chatting or ignoring customers. When we approached the desk, an employee rose to meet, greet, and ask how they could help. The room appeared newly remodeled, done beautifully. No breakfast other than fruit and coffee. A bottle of water provided for each daily, no charge! The restaurant food was excellent, manager is a jewel! Shuttle driver pleasant! Transit is great, no cab needed. We'll bring the family for a vacation if we can get a lower room rate. $167 + tax is high, but this is Santa Barbara midweek prices.

The room is small, outdated, with old chipped furniture, and a dirty shower. No fridge or microwave. And is off the beaten path. I'm surprised at the other great reviews, but maybe it is because most are using it for being close to a medical facility and not a vacation experience.

We are sorry you were so unhappy with our property; and apologize for anything in the rooms not up to proper standards. We do have refrigerators in every room; microwaves in many of them. We also have a microwave at front desk that we nuke food for the guests in all the time.

Thank you for your review; and hope you continue to travel the Best Western way.

The rooms were beautifully decorated, large and with excellent bathroom and king size bed. Very well cleaned and everything worked. The pool is well cleaned and good to use. The service is excellent. The restaurant and breakfast not that good - have breakfast another place. Location. You to drive to the centre of Santa barbara. The walk took us at leaf 30 minutes.
