“A slightly different perspective”
Reviewed March 2, 2008

We stayed at this property the night of Feb. 16, 2008 based on a combination of rates available throughout Santa Barbara and the resounding positive reviews here.
Best Westerns have always ranked as about a two-star hotel in my book. Holiday Inns a three, Sheraton/Westin/Marriott are fours. Most Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton's are fives (to give some perspective here). I would rate this about a 2.5 to 3.0.
Our room was vintage Best Western...firm mattress (a little too firm as we both had sore backs in the morning), "country bumpkin" furnishings (floral wallpaper from the '70s, lazy-boy recliner also from the '70s, etc), bathrooms in good working order but that haven't been updated since the '70s. Bathrooms were very clean, however.
Now don't get us wrong. The room was immaculately clean (though there was an odd musty sort of scent). And for a Best Western, it's unusual that they use Crabtree and Evelyn bath products. The property also appeared to have been freshly painted. These are all very nice features, and they deserve to be noted. Also, the front staff were friendly and offered up useful information. Also a plus!
The restaurant, A Capella had very nice ambiance (physically). We only ate breakfast there and, well, it was kind of awful. We think the oil they used to cook with was expired and made the potatoes and eggs taste...well....nasty. Oh well...
So, if you are content with Best Western/Choice Hotel type room and ammenities, then this is probably the place to stay if you're looking for a room in Santa Barbara. If you fancy a hotel with better ammenities than a Best Western, this hotel is probably going to disappoint you despite all of the positive reviews here. The reviews here, in our opinion, are just a little too hyped up on this particular hotel. It's not a "dive". But "it ain't all that" either.

  • Liked — Front desk staff were helpful and friendly
  • Disliked — Musty smell in the room and poor quality food at the restaurant (breakfast)

I was looking for a nice economical place to stay in Santa Barbara for one night with a friend of mine. This fit the bill perfectly. The pillows were nice and fluffy, the bed comfortable and the room cozy and the in-room supplies (i.e. soap etc) were nice as well. This is probably not the place for Starwood (Westin, W) snobs, but if you are looking for a nice place to stay where the rooms have some real character, the staff pleasant, and the location close to everything, then this is the place. We had a nice room with a balcony.

  • Liked — The comfortable bed, cozy decor and price
  • Disliked — Well it wasnt right downtown, but pretty darn close

I have recently stayed five days at Encina Motor Lodge and Suites in Santa Barbara, CA. I have done so 2-3 times annually for the past twenty-three years. In my opinion this property is the cleanest, most convenient, reasonably priced and well managed lodging facility in Santa Barbara. I hightly recommend the Encina Motor Lodge and Suites.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel, we chose this one based on the reviews here at Trip Advisor. Because it was one of the least expensive hotels we could find, we weren't expecting much, and we were VERY pleasantly surprised. The rooms are quaint and homey, they even have a little kitchen. The hotel (and the neighborhood) is very clean and pretty, also close to State Street. The only semi-negatives are the cleaning schedule (if you're not out early enough you can only get turn-down service later that day if you call the front desk, which is not a big deal, they refill anything you used and give you fresh towels, empty trash and turn down your bed) and we had a little trouble using the card to open the door. (Really a minor issue.) They have a nice restaurant in the hotel as well, good food, pretty atmosphere and very convenient. I highly recommend this hotel. We will definitely be staying there again!

  • Liked — I thought the kitchenette was really nice, very useful for a long stay.
  • Disliked — The cleaning schedule (once in the morning before 10:30 or you miss it for the entire day) was an unpleasant surprise, but at least they offer turndown service later.

My wife and I have chosen "The Encina" as most preferable place to stay while in Santa Barbara. I consider the personnel to be the friendliest I've known in that industry. Management is continually improving and upgrading its facilities and have implemented some of the finest creature features one could ask for. There have been times, with all the improvements taking place, that there were minor interferrences but a call or visit to the front desk always rectified the matter.

One can not ask for a better place to stay and enjoy.

I have stayed at the Encina Lodge in Santa Barbara, CA. many, many times, and it is always a pleasure to stay there. The staff is incredibly friendly and accomodating. The rooms and suites are always very clean and neat. The Encina is centrally located to whatever needs I have, medical or shopping. I insist on quiet and the Encina exceeds my needs and has always given me a peaceful, quiet stay. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in the Santa Barbara area.

  • Liked — Incredible service and friendliness from the front desk to the gardener
  • Disliked — Wanted to stay longer

I was scheduled for surgery by Dr. Gregory Keller this past Monday. His surgery center is right behind the Best Western Encina Lodge. I booked two nights...the staff was so accommodating...I had to have a downstairs room..they gave us one right by the office and it was perfect.

The room was excellent...very nicely furnished..very girlie which I loved..and two recliners!!!! The refrigerator was a Godsend as after surgery, I could only have certain items...

I would recommend it most highly,..and, one more thing...a morning paper on the door each morning...oh,oh, one more thing...the beds!!!!! I only wished I could have taken them home...sooooo comfortable.

Most stays, the beds are so hard but these beds were better than my own.
