“Quaint B&B in SB”
Reviewed May 23, 2007

I wanted to take my new wife on a mini-honeymoon right after our wedding and decided to stay in Santa Barbara. Since neither one of us had stayed at a bed and breakfast before, I thought it might be a good experience to try one out. I reserved the room online, however, be careful because the website is notoriously inaccurate and I received a call and had to change rooms.

The B&B is located on a residential street, but stands out with it's historic look. Check-in is between 3pm-6pm and then the innkeeper leaves for the evening. If you cannot make it between these hours, I highly recommend calling and making arrangements for check-in and breakfast the next morning. We stayed in the Victorian room which was decorated accordingly. The room is divided into a bedroom and living area. The living area had a fireplace, fridge, and coffeemaker and was spacious for two. The bedroom had a queen bed which was comfortable, yet the room barely fit the bed and was a bit tight to maneuver around. There was also another gas fireplace in the bedroom which was nice and an A/C wall unit though we did not use it because it was cool at night. The bathroom was clean, but small again so if you are very tall or of a larger frame it could be uncomfortable.

The breakfast is delivered to your room and consists of fresh fruit, a baked good, waffle/pancake/quiche/etc, and fresh OJ. The breakfast for filling enough to get the day started and tasted fresh. The menu changes daily and is a surprise as the innkeeper unaware of the following morning's menu. At checkout the innkeeper sat us down and went through various restaurant and activities available to us around SB. Please keep in mind since it was our first B&B and we have nothing to compare it to, but all in all the experience was great if you are looking for something differenct from the Holiday Inn type room.

Tip: In the off season there is a 25% discount on rooms. Which make the rooms a decent deal.

First I have to say that we were lucky to get a place in Santa Barbara at all. We needed a one night stay on a Friday which most hotels don't do. The White Jasmine was our last resort, and though in my opinion it was a bit expensive, we thought it was very nice. We were greeted by the innkeeper and permitted to check in a little early. The innkeeper sat down briefly to show us some places to see/eat around town. He was sort of high strung I would say- he had a New York accent and reminded me of Christopher Walken. We never saw him again after that. Our room was the Captain's Corner. We had our own entrance on the outside of the house with our own spa on our enclosed patio(which we enjoyed while looking up at the stars). The room was cozy, the bed huge, and the fireplace nice. We liked that the room was dimly lit and didn't mind the small bathroom. I should note though, that if you are a very tall or large person this shower would not work out for you. We walked all down State street and did a bit of shopping and then stopped at Louie's for dinner which was recommended by the innkeeper. After being treated very rudely we left. We don't tolerate snobby people. We were so glad we did because we found the best restaurant we had been to our entire honeymoon. The place is called Chef Karim's. Its Mediterranean food- the most delicious food I've ever tried. There is a belly dancing show, a 7 course meal, a cozy, romantic setting, and extremely friendly staff. For breakfast at the inn they bring a basket of a plated warm meal at a time you choose. It was very good and convenient, but quite impersonal. The gardens in the back are beautiful and there is an enclosed spa you can reserve alone time in. Overall we were pleased with our stay.

A lot of the negative reviews here seem to come either from people with a personal vendetta or people who don't understand what a historic building experience is like. If you want to party, go hang out with some college kids on spring break, if you have kids, stay at Disneyland, if you are afraid of 100+ year old buildings, stay at a brand new Hilton. BUT... if you are an adult couple with an appreciation of antique styles, historic homes, beautiful gardens and peace and quiet, visit the White Jasmine Inn! Our stay was wonderful. We were married in the beautiful garden area behind the Craftsmen home and were very happy with the abundance of plants, flowers and landscaping around the yard. The setting was lovely, tranquille and private just as we wanted. Our room was a nice size and the temperature was fine. It had a wonderful lavender scent. The down bedding was heavenly! I slept so well, I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning. We loved the breakfast delivered in a basket, and appreciated the convenience and privacy of eating in our own room. The bathroom was a bit tiny, but that is understandable in a building of this age (that probably didn't originally have a bathroom there!) The shower pressure was nice and the water was warm. Even the complimentary shampoo and shower gel had a nice scent. The sink was unusual- it was outside the bathroom and not super easy to use, but charming! It was a sink placed into an antique dresser. The little inconveniences like that weren't a hassle and were perfectly suitable considering the age and decor of the 19th century home. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. We are looking forward to visiting a different room next time!

My wife and I just spent our 1 year anniversary at the White Jasmine Inn B&B and it was excellent, no complaints at all. The room was good size, the bed was unbelievable! Our only comments or areas of opportunity would be the followin:

1. The TV needs to be at least 20"... a 12" TV is not "viewable"
2. We used the excellent outdoor and private jacuzzi at the back of the inn and it was great, but we did not find where to turn the light off so we could see the beautiful night sky... maybe there can be a switch or something
3. Upgrade the reservation system online. I asked for two specific rooms that were available online, but it turned out that they were not available and had to stayed at another room

Besides this 3 items, everything was great. It was our first experience in a B&B and we loved it; whenever we go back to Santa Barbara we will for sure stay at the White Jasmine Inn!!!

The White Jasmine Inn was warm and charming. The Innkeepers were kind, informative and accommodating. Our room, "Heather" was exceptional in size and has a most comfortable king sized, four poster bed. Breakfast was delivered at exactly the time we requested, in a lovely picnic basket, and was light, fresh, and a perfect start to what would be a perfect day strolling down State Street and ending at Sterns Wharf.

We will definately come back to White Jasmine!

First rate location, helpful and friendly staff. The Bordeaux suite was actually its own little house with a full kitchen and a luxurious jacuzzi bath. What a great place. We had in-room massages and a great dinner at Louies up the street. All of these services were handled by the staff and were also first rate. We will definitely be back. SOON!

The basics were good: comfy beds; tasty food; some truly lovely antiques; quiet surroundings; free coffee, tea and wine. I was not a fan of the uber-Victorian vibe, but that is just a hazard of staying in a traditional B&B. However, there were some problems with professionalism. Though he didn't know much about Santa Barbara or even the food he was serving, the host nevertheless came in and talked and talked...and talked...and even managed to insult one of the other couples because he just didn't know when to stop talking. There were stains on the towels and mildew on the fixtures in the tub (which came off in the water while I was bathing - ew!) Signs in the rooms were missing words and basic proofreading -- which didn't really affect our stay, of course, but shows a lack of care and attentiveness. In general, I thought it would take just a little to make this a really nice B&B, so it's a shame they haven't put the effort in.
