“Romantic and restful.”
Reviewed September 22, 2007

My wife and I planned a long-overdue getaway weekend and booked a room at the Cheshire Cat on the advice of a guidebook we had. Using their excellent website, we examined several rooms and selected the Queen of Hearts, which turned out to be perfect. It was a cozy room with its own patio area and our own jacuzzi.

We found everything about the weekend to be perfectly delightful. The staff was friendly and helpful; the breakfasts were delicious; and we also enjoyed the wine and cheese and chocolate chip cookies at 5pm hosted in the main house.

We slept late every day and had breakfast brought to us in our little patio. The breakfast sign-in sheet was a nice touch, allowing us to choose our preferred breakfast time, and delivery was right on schedule. The inn itself is convenient to downtown Santa Barbara; we spent a Saturday afternoon walking from the inn down the entire length of State street and back.

The grounds are particularly well-kept and lovely; a very nice part of the stay. The Alice-in-Wonderland theming was pleasant and not too overwhelming--just the right balance.

We would definitely stay there again, and recommend it to our friends, as we made some wonderful memories this weekend.

We stayed at the Cheshire Cat the beginning of September. The rooms were amazing (I highly recommend upgrading to the balcony room), the grounds immaculate and the inn keepers were all extremely helpful. Breakfast each morning was incredible!! And there was plenty to choose from too! And the evening wine and snacks were a perfect way to cap off the day. They had plenty of parking on the grounds, so you didn't have to worry about alternate side of the street parking, and there were shaded spots too! The hot tub was a bit too hot (and I don't mind hot), but that's my only complaint. The location was key (1 block to State Street) where all the restaurants and shops are. The rooms were spacious and clean. And the beds were super comfortable. Cheshire Cat was perfect for our two night stay in Santa Barbara!

After reading the tripadvisor reviews I had high expectations. I was a bit thrown off by a somewhat lukewarm greeting upon arrival. But I was really disappointed when I got to my room. It was unusually hot that day and the room was steamy. All I wanted to do was take a quick nap, but couldn't because there is no A/C and the fan didn't seem to provide much relief.

The room seemed relatively cleaned but smelled a bit musty. This proved to be a problem when I woke up in the middle of the night with an asthma attack. I have a history of this and take medication for it, but occasionally get attacks when I am in a place with a lot of dust mites. Overall the place seemed like it could use some updating and upgrading. Old bathroom and the decor looks like it could even give Laura Ashley a seizure. Floral prints, floral prints, and more floral prints.

Breakfast was good and I enjoyed the outdoor seating. The garden is nice too. Overall not a bad place, but I think some of these reviews are a bit too enthusiastic.

We loved this little B & B set in the residential streets of Santa Barbara, but close enough to State Street to access the hub of town. Bharti, the innkeeper, & her other staff were most friendly & helpful. I had been sure to double-check upon calling to reserve, that our room would be quiet and she was quite correct in her assurance of this. We stayed in Tweedledee in the Coach House building, away from the main house. It was very spacious, comfortable & private. We enjoyed the morning breakfast, which we could have delivered to our room since we were there on a weekend. The evening hors d'ouvres & wine were also delicious & really hit the spot, especially if one opts to sit out in the lovely garden area near the water fountain. I found the Inn rates quite comparable and appreciated that there was no additional parking charge. I highly recommend the Cheshire Cat and would definitely stay there again.

Wonderful place to stay. We passed through Santa Barbara on our honeymoon and stayed at the Cheshire Cat Inn. The buildings are beautiful and the rooms fantastic. Well appointed, comfy and good value. We found the staff to be helpful and accommodating and were really quite sad to leave. The breakfast was excellent as was the complimentary wine that we enjoyed whilst sat in the lovely gardens. It's a short walk into town were there are lots of great restaurants which the staff recommended.

Wanting a special way to celebrate our 15th anniversary, I found the Cheshire Cat Inn using TripAdvisor. I booked a weekend vacation and was in heaven from the moment my husband and I arrived! The grounds were gorgeous with all the trees, fountain, lots of flowers and rosebushes. The houses were just beautiful!!! We stayed in the Alice Suite and were very pleased with the room. The bed was comfortable and the balcony was so inviting, i read and took a nap on the lounge chair in the evening. The breakfasts were delicious and the evening snacks were tasty as well. The innkeeper Bharti is a gem of a gal, lots of info on the town and restaurants. I also loved reading the journals left in the room from the previous visitors. From begining to end our stay was relaxing. Santa Barbara is a great place to visit, lots to see and do and the Cheshire Cat is close to it all. Our stay was so fabulous, that i have already booked another weekend away for next year and i know we will have a great time again..... ;)

We spent one night at this B & B. The setting is lovely, a restored Victorian in a nice, but heavily trafficked neighborhood. The staff seamed friendly enough, but it didn't have the same touch we are used to in a B&B. The sheets were no better than Motel 6 grade, stiff & scratchy industrial white sheets, with the double top sheet on each side of the blanket. The towels were dry and somewhat threadbare also. The evening hors d’oeurves were Costco purchased stale crackers, with the Kirkland stamp on them, and hummus, with a small plate of vegi's with sour cream, no dip mix added. The breakfast was very disappointing; since we were there on a weekday it was continental. The place was almost full, but no hot breakfast. Small boxes of cereal, Rice Crispies, Raisin Bran, packets of instant oatmeal, Costco bagels & English Muffins, a nice fruit salad. What was most rude, was that the kitchen staff could be seen making stuffed french toast and other breakfast items for the next day's breakfast, but they couldn't bother to feed the days residents a hot breakfast. We didn't get any special deal or price for staying on a weekday, so why the difference in breakfast? We choose to stay in B&B for those special touches, none of which this particular establishment offered. We expected more for $200 a night. We'll stay elsewhere next time!!!
