“Simply wonderful”
Reviewed July 26, 2014

We have had the pleasure of staying her twice in the past few years. It is simply wonderful and all of the things you want a bed and breakfast to be - beautiful rooms/common areas, charming, quiet, private, terrific breakfasts, having character (the cat theme is not overdone), etc. The staff could not be nicer or more helpful. We have stayed in both a regular room and in one of their larger units. Both were delightful. Location? Walking distance to State Street in Santa Barbara and the shopping, a bit of a hike to the beach. Plenty of parking. Just everything you need for a getaway. On our last visit we met many a traveler from overseas that only added to our experience. One note - the larger units are perfect for families and there were families staying there during our visit but absolutely no problem on their behavior and keeping the whole environment quiet. Go, you'll enjoy it. We did.

Room Tip: The March Hare room is on the small side. OK size for a couple for only a couple of days, though.

My daughter and I stayed at this B & B for 3 days and 2 nights. We were on a mother and daughter get away. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel right at home. The property consists of several houses. We stayed in house number 2 - in Alice's suite. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated, it had a large sitting area, a huge bed, roomy balcony, a tall fan (I love fans in my rooms) although it wasn't needed as the room had air conditioning. We had an opportunity to look into all of the rooms in house number 2 at different times during our stay and they were all lovely. You can choose from street side or courtyard side. Our suite was courtyard side and very quiet. There is parking behind the property. It was a block away from IHOP if you wanted a quick breakfast with kids although the breakfast at the Inn was nice. The staff were personable, accommodating, and helpful. The wine and cheese at 5 was presented in the courtyard and lovely. The morning breakfast was great with a good selection of breakfast options.

I would highly recommend this place. I plan to go back and spend a weekend away with the hubby.

Room Tip: Courtyard side would be a quieter choice however the street side is pretty quiet too. There are onl...

We spent a weekend at the Cheshire Cat Inn, and really liked it. It is a really nice place, very friendly staff, professional and organized in every respect. Parking in back was easy and off the street. The breakfasts were very good. Very clean, nice. Beautiful bathroom with very good lighting. The room didn't have very good circulation but that didn't seem to be a problem - we didn't want to turn on the air conditioning. Really, a beatiful place.

After reading previous reviews I was expecting a home run experience. Unfortunately, I was disappointed, though the pros did outweigh the cons. The property is charming and well maintained. The location is convenient and quiet. The experience more interesting than a typical hotel. But the greeting from the staff at check-in was perfunctory. The afternoon appetizers were mediocre and the breakfast quiche from Costco. Nice but not in the same league as real top quality inns.

We appreciate you taking the time to write a review and that you enjoyed our well maintained property. However we are dismayed to read that our food service was a disappointment. We serve a choice of five hors d'oeuvres with our local wines nightly and our breakfast quiche is Julia Child's recipe made on the premises. In fact all our breakfast and hors d'oeuvres items are prepared in house. We strive to give our guests the kind of experience that we, ourselves enjoy when traveling, and are constantly looking to improve where we can.
Sincerely,
Christine Dunstan, Owner

This bed and breakfast inn is a breath of fresh air and tranquility with an old-world charm, hidden in downtown Santa Barbara. I lived in Santa Barbara decades ago, and never wandered down this particular street, although it's very close to everything of interest (and there's a lot!). I arrived tired from a very long drive with heavy traffic, and was greeted with warmth and cordiality, and shown to my room, which was immaculate, cozy and very well appointed. The Alice in Wonderland theme was apparrent, but tastefully done and certianly in keeping with the Victorian architecture. if you decide to stay here, you can check out the rooms on line - they are each unique and beautifully decorated.

I very much enjoyed the evening wine and cheese hour (especially the home-made treats), which allowed guests to relax and mingle before pursuing evening plans. Much more fun and tranquil than staying at a hotel! Oddly, I actually ran into some people I knew the second evening. The Innkeepers were very cordial and quick to recommend local restaurants and adventures - and they were spot on! Breakfast was also a social occasion and the selection was impressive (and delicious, with lots of home-made offerings). The grounds are amazing - parking is ample and well-protected from the streett and from view; the gardens and patio are beautiful and well-maintained - especially the tranquil garden in the back (very Zen-like).

Best of all, I slept beautifully, which is unusual and was unexpected, since it was graduation weekend for nearby U.C. Santa Barbara, and the students are well-known for partying and flocking to the downtown areas outstanding eateries and bars. I have stayed elsewhere in Santa Barbara, and this is by far the ost enjoyable, comfortable, relaxing and charming place - plus, it's a really good value for the area. I plan to return and I recommend it highly. I never did see the Cheshire Cat; but I saw plenty of smiles.

Room Tip: The West Valerio Street side is quieter; I even kept my window open at night and slept fine.

My husband and I visited with my sister and her husband. We stayed in one half of one of the duplexes across the street from the main houses.
Pros:
-Exceptionally clean
-Quiet
-Excellent location on the edge of the residential district and the business district. We walked to shops, restaurants, etc.
-Innkeeper and staff are very nice and helpful.
-We loved the happy hour which included local wine. Our glasses continued to be filled until the end of happy hour. Very nice food. (My husband loved the deviled eggs.)
-High quality breakfast which was plentiful.
-The gardens and grounds are gorgeous and inviting. We had our wine and breakfast on the patio between the two main houses.
Cons:
-Can't think of any. We just loved the place.

This B&B is a much better value than the surrounding hotels/motels. The location is very good; a short walk to State Street. The breakfast was excellent and varied, and the staff very helpful and friendly. The surrounding gardens were every nice and made for a pleasant outdoor breakfast and wine hour with snacks. The rooms all seemed well maintained. We had the smallest room, the Doormouse. It was perfectly nice and functional, if a bit noisy from the street traffic (although that was pretty minimal at night). All in all I think the Cheshire Cat is the best deal in a very expensive town.
