“One of the best B and B's ever”

The Cheshire Cat Inn was comfortable and had a lovely hors d'oeurves and wine hour as well as one of the best and most plentiful of breakfasts. Cookies by the fire after we returned from dinner. I highly recommend staying here while in Santa Barbara. The I keeper was helpful with suggestions as to where to dine and directions to several attractions.

This was our 4th stay and although we always have an enjoyable visit, this time there were a few annoyances. The main reason we've stayed here before is not only the lovely location (although Chapala can be a noisy side street) but the charm of the entire inn. This is the first time there have been young children at the inn and it was distracting having 2 toddlers running around during breakfast and again at the evening wine and appetizers. We are doting grandparents but would never ever consider bringing them to a B&B..it is just not appropriate and this alone would make us reconsider our next stay.
The sheets and towels are showing wear (the sheets especially were very worn and rough) and should have been changed out on our visit last year; we only received one set of soap and shampoo for a 3 night visit (thankfully we also bring our own); there are no screens on any windows which I find odd because we do have mosquitos and flies in Southern California!
Connie is a very gracious and hardworking host, and the owners need to pay some extra attention to their inn. I had previously written these notes privately to the owners and also shared them with Connie, but have received no response 2 months later....

Room Tip: Alice's Room and the White Rabbit have a nice balcony and are more quiet than the rooms on the C...

Dear Guest,

I am sorry to hear that your recent stay was not up to our normal high standards and please rest assured that I will be diligent in solving the issues you’ve pointed out regarding worn sheets and towels as well as shampoo replenishment. It truly is a disappointment to me that your experience was marred with these oversights and wish I could have corrected them whilst you were in house. The disruptive atmosphere you encountered is also of concern as I do understand that the concept of an Inn does not usually include small children but we are bound by California law to accept them. While not allowed in the main houses, we do accept children in our cottages and on occasion they could be present at breakfast and during our wine and cheese hour. Your experience, however, has made me more aware of this important matter and I will consequently review our current policy so that is not intrusive into our future guests’ environment. Lastly, to address your commentary about window screens, I have added this valid point to our list of improvements and thank you for your constructive observation.

I regret that you did not receive a timely reply to your previous communication but realize that it was sent while I was out of the country. Meanwhile, I hope you will return again to the Cheshire Cat and ask you to contact me directly with any future bookings.

Best regards,

Christine Dunstan

We were passing through Santa Barbara and stayed here for 1 night. It is located near the downtown area. A Victorian style home with a fireplace in the lobby area. This is where they serve wine, cheese, and appetizers in the early evening. The room upstairs was on the small size but decorated nicely. We had a queen bed, which was comfortable. The breakfast is the morning was excellent. Had a nice fruit salad and Danish pancakes (which were delicious). They also had a sideboard with bagels, muffins, hard boiled eggs, etc. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed on the side of the house away from the busy street and didn't hear any noise.

My wife and I stayed at the Cheshire Cat for 3 days in January 2014. This little B&B is simply wonderful. Terrific rooms - we stayed in the delightful Alice's room - great location, wonderful staff and a lovely breakfast with something different each day. Afternoon wine and tasty snacks were a lovely touch. We really did feel we like we were in wonderland.
As for Santa Barbara - we loved it!!

We were a group of 4 doing a roadtrip and had planned to stop at Santa Barbara for a night. We chose Cheshire Cat Inn seeing that it was a top choice. It was a decision that we never regretted. In fact, it became our best lodging throughout our trip.

We stayed at Prestbury and it was like having our own home. The unit was spacious for 4 and came with a fully equipped kitchen, electric fireplace (cleaner as compared to traditional), hot tub and quality bath amenities (think molton brown).

Service was impeccable too and breakfast was excellent. Had to give kudos to Connie (hope I got her name right) who made every effort to welcome us to beautiful Santa Barbara.

The only reason I don't give this 5 stars if that I feel we should have been warned about noise on Chapula (one way busy street) next to the cottage we stayed in. My husband is a light sleeper and after not sleeping for two nights had to move to another hotel (El Encanto) up in the hills. The 2nd night wasn't as cold so we didn't have the white noise of the heater so I didn't sleep either. He was going there to "chill" so it really was too noisy in that cottage for him to relax during the day. I was out walking the city so day noise didn't bother me.
BUT, the Inn and staff were lovely, the breakfast was delicious and people we talked to at breakfast said noise was not a problem in their rooms (they are on 2nd story above traffic).
Most importantly, the owner did not charge us for the remaining days we had booked even though it was Christmas week. We will definitely be back there but will be careful to stay away from the busy street.

Room Tip: Just stay away from the busy one way street on the corner.

We wanted to take a quick getaway between Xmas and school starting. Looking for a direct flight landed us in Santa Barbara. The weather was great (unseasonably warm according to one of the inn keepers) and the city is small enough that you can get to all of the sites very easily. This is a bit farther off the main area but close enough to walk if you want.

Pros: The various inn keepers on many of the days were all uniformly nice and helpful. The wine and hors d'oevres every evening were nice (not spectacular but good). The service was particularly ample on New Year's eve - which was a nice surprise. The breakfasts also had a variety of choices and when they served quiche, there was a vegetarian option. The grounds are beautiful - with little surprises hidden in the gardens.

Cons: They don't actually have a lot of indoor space to serve breakfast and the dining table is a bit dark. On our first day the ladies who were asked to share the table with us clearly did not want to do so. (You can tell by tone of voice and body language). Since there was no other location, we just chatted amongst ourselves. We had a similar experience on our last day with another couple but they just asked for 2 minutes to finish up. For the rest of the time, all the other people were very nice.
The room we had was spacious and beautiful but had a feeling of being a bit old. The wiring was odd and there weren't enough outlets. The internet was also a little slow and spotty but I'm not sure whether it's due to the service that the B&B has itself or the distance of our room. It may be that the rooms in the main houses have better reception and are more quaint.
There's also not enough parking. So, it is better to walk, if you can. (On the other hand, Santa Barbara has ample parking downtown and the first 75 minutes are free. In a sense, it's a toss up.)

Would we stay here again: Yes. I suspect that we might want to split our stay between something in the wine country (so that we don't have to drive around so much) and/or the beach but this was definitely a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: If you need something, it's easier to ask someone rather than figure out their phone system - so...
