We used almost all our Amex points for a nice little getaway to the wine country and SB. When we arrived at the hotel about 15 min early, we were told to wait for our room- check in is at 4 pm and the room was still not ready at 4:15. I repeatedly asked form any upgrades and was told sorry nothing available. However, my husband was getting some change at the desk shortly afterwards and heard the desk attendant congratulate the next couple on their " complimentary upgrade"!!!! And she also confirmed it was their first visit as was ours. Roof top pool sounds glamorous but is only 3' deep and is wedged in between chairs- everything is so cramped and small it's uncomfortable. Boutique hotel yes- rooms no bigger than your closet - yes. Way way too small for 2 adults and 2 children. Don't waste your precious time.

I love Santa Barbara and missed living there. I wanted to share the fun of the city with my boyfriend. I asked my friends who live in Santa Barbara for recommendations. They all said stay at Canary Hotel. I am so glad I took their advice. Lauren at the front desk was so friendly which set the mood for our stay. The rooftop swimming pool and jacuzzi is so beautiful with stellar views of the mountains. Of course the happy hour with free wine also helps to set the mood of utter relaxation. At night being in jacuzzi under the crescent moon was just plain bliss. The next day I appreciated the hotel being centerally located for all the shops. All the hotel staff and restaurant staff were accomodating and friendly. I highly recommend this hotel. It's a winner! Also the bed was so comfortable with high quality sheets, this is important if you are away on a romantic vacation.

We had an amazing time from the moment we drove our car in. As soon as we said our name, the bell boys and valet knew exactly who we were and ran into reception and said they have arrived. We were slightly confused til we got to the front desk where they said, we are so excited, we have being waiting for you to arrive, we have a big surprise for you! Again confused, we were thinking our other half had booked a surprise, but then we realised the hotel get us a complimentary upgrade to the presidential suite for our stay! It was the most amazing room and such a wonderful surprise. We also received free champagne as well! We got great help from the conceirge, front desk and valet/bell boys - the latter recommended great places for us to eat locally and also breakfast in an authentic diner which was what we wanted.

All in all a fab trip, the staff make the place and the hotel itself is wonderful in a great location! Couldnt recommend it enough. Sign up to the in touch rewards for free wifi and free raid the minibar for up to $10 worth of nibbles/drinks! Would definitely stay again!

We stayed at The Canary on a trip down the California coast and cannot say enough good things about it. The location is fabulous if you want to stay near State Street - the main part of Santa Barbara with shops and restaurants galore. And it's only a mile from the beach. The room was wonderful - beautifully and comfortably appointed with a large bathroom and nice bedroom and sitting room - we were upgraded to a suite upon arrival. The bed was so comfortable and the suite was immaculate. It was casually elegant and luxuriously comfortable. The staff was very receptive and welcoming. Our only complaint is that we could only stay one night! We were breaking up the drive from San Francisco to LA with an overnight stop in Santa Barbara. I would strongly recommend the Canary!

My husband and I stayed at the Canary as the first night stopover on our road trip from LA to San Francisco. It was my first experience of a Kimpton Hotel and I was impressed. The young staff are very enthusiastic and anxious to please. They were also very efficient .Parking is $25 a day if I recall correctly. We were still very jet lagged having flown in from Sydney the morning of the day before so after walking around Santa Barbara and organizing a cheap US phone for my husband at the Radio Shack. we turned in early after a delightful meal in a nearby Italian restaurant."Ristorante Aldos see http://www.sbaldos.com/. which is just down the road. The four poster bed proved to be very comfortable. The layout of the room and the bathroom is splendid. I had joined Kimpton in Touch ( the Kimpton loyalty scheme) before leaving Australia so we had free wi fi and dollars to spend in the mini bar. After a lovely night's sleep we had the best breakfast that we had anywhere in our 19 day trip in the USA. I had fruit and yoghurt , orange juice and coffee. The fruit had a much stronger taste than here in Australia. Seasonal berries were the highlight. Fresh orange juice and plentiful coffee in a quiet restaurant room looking out onto the Californian streetscape. I would certainly recommend a stay here and I will be trying out the other Kimpton Hotels. Extremely impressed.

Color us impressed, PamelaBruce! Wow! Thank you so much for the lovely review. Sounds like we got your road trip off to the right start. I’m so glad you enjoyed yourselves and that Canary and Finch & Fork helped make the jet lag a distant memory. Don’t be a stranger!

This was our last hotel on our Californian road trip. What a treat. We hadn't intended to go so upmarket, but we hadn't thought to book ahead, so there was the choice of this one and lemon tree motel. What a relief we up graded. (Lemon tree is way out of town btw)
Ideal for the shops which are manageable with a family, but plenty of choice. H+M, Abercrombie, forever 21, lots of boutiques. Walking distance to about 100 restaurants, yes really.
Shuttle from end of street to beach area, about 1/4 of a block.
All the other reviews are fair and accurate, as are the photos, so nothing further to add.
In case it hasn't been said recently, there is fruit flavoured water at the pool and reception, and coffee in the morning, and a fruity concoction every afternoon.

Room Tip: its downtown not beach location, but access to beach is very easy on the regular shuttle.

Location of hotel is great. Just a few minutes walk from state street. Rooms are well furnished, very clean, beds were huge and very comfortable. Rooftop pool was great. Lovely relaxing area, pool is 3ft deep so perfect for children. Great views. Staff were fantastic - from front desk staff to valet staff to restaurant staff. They were always friendly with a smile and nothing was any problem. Only stayed one night but will definitely return for a longer stay next time.
