“Decent food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2014

We had a nice meal at Bouchon with friends. Reservations are a must, the restaurant is very popular. I was really expecting to be blown away by the food at Bouchon, but it was hit or miss. We shared crab cakes and the peach salad. Both were delicious. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals well enough, but no one was raving about anything.

For a similar price point, I would recommend Downey's around the corner!

“Nice Ameri-French dining”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2014

We were slavering over the Bouchon menu before our trip to Santa Barbara and looked forward to the experience. First, know that you must have a reservation. On short notice the best we could do was 8:00. C'est la vie. We went on a Tuesday which is Chef Murphy's market day where he sources most if not all of his ingredients for the night from a local farmer's market. The bread was excellent. I probably could have had just that and been happy. For a starter I had the Salade Lyonnaise. Good composition and a perfectly cooked egg on top. My only complaint there was that the dressing was a tad heavy and a little oversalted such that it overwhelmed the fresh ingredients underneath. My wife ordered the bleu cheese tart and that was very nice.

For mains we had the maple-glazed duck and the pan-roasted chicken breast. The duck was cooked perfectly and had a nice demi-glaze. The succotash was a well-chosen side and delicious. The duck breast lacked some flavor (lazy duck?) but the thigh was excellent. The chicken breast was prepared well and quite flavorful. If you're a novice to French style cuisine or feel intimidated by some of the other offerings, go with the chicken.

Chef Murphy himself served our plates and we also got great attentive service from Byron. There's an extensive wine list with nearly every local wine available although the glass of pinot noir I ordered came to the table too warm. We skipped dessert not because it didn't look good, but because we were full and tired from a day of wine-tasting.

“Very good French cuisine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

Reservations are a must. The food was quite good and the service was excellent. The grilled peach salad is excellent as are the crab cakes. My husband enjoyed the white sea bass while I had the chicken wrapped in pancetta. Simple chicken it was not! The chocolate chip bread pudding was the divine ending to a wonderful meal.

“Enjoyable Meal!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

Enjoyable meal at the Bouchon. Reservations recommended. There is a limited menu so need to be receptive to maybe trying something new. None of the options available would have been my first choice however The pan seared scallops were good. The bread was outstanding as was the service. Rather odd was there was only one bathroom located next door in the special event area.

“Do not miss Bouchon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

Simply outstanding in all areas. Unquestionably superior food, wine, atmosphere and service. Server's recommendations are excellent. If you can only visit one top-tier, high-end restaurant in SB, this is the place. Reservations very strongly recommended (even weekdays) and if you're in town for a weekend, make them well in advance. Ask for patio seating for couples, inside seating for high-end business dinners. Although you'll see people dressed in all versions of Santa Barbara casual, I recommend a blazer for men. City parking nearby (less than 1/2 block), skip looking for a spot on the street. Children will likely not appreciate the cuisine, although older teens might.
