Description: Joe's Cafe, a venerable Santa Barbara dining and drinking institution, is the oldest restaurant in the city. Over the years, it has become a favorite for locals and tourists alike, who mingle over cocktails or chat during dinner in a buzzing, traditional atmosphere. The exceptional ambiance underscores its rich heritage and long history. Our menu is hand crafted, modern American favorites in generous portions. Diners can find everything from prime steaks and chops, savory lamb shank, market fresh seafood and vegetables, classic sandwiches, pastas, daily soups, burgers, vegetarian entrees, and salads.

“Money's worth for breakfast”

You can count on a hearty breakfast at Joe's. The French toast came with an ample serving of fruit, not just a garnish. The thick slices were satisfying. Wait staff was efficient and friendly but seemed stretched. Food arrived quickly and hot. No espresso here, though.

“There are 100 better.”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

A great location. A wonderful old building. Charming professional waiters. Can't miss, right? Well, joe's found a way. Start with one harried bartender for 50 guests during happy hour, add bizarre rules, e.g., you can have a gin and tonic for happy hour, but not plain gin. House wine that tastes like its from Mexico, well you get it. Joe's is an institution which is forgiven its sins by locals and tried once by tourists. Unless you're visiting for a loooong time, try someplace else.

“Great style, food to match”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

I´ve always loved diners and restaurants with a history. Joe´s has the right feel, and the food is good, too. Having said that, I didm´t like the tv screens (I do get that if you want a place to work as a bar these days, it´s probably obligatory to have those) and the noise level.

“Strictly rating on the drinks”

We came here after dinner to get some drinks because we were told the bartenders have heavy hands. They do indeed. Enjoy!!

“Good comfort food in a great location”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

My college student grandson suggested this place in the middle of lower State Street surrounded by lots of eclectic eateries. I was pleasantly surprised to find an old fashioned diner. There was something to satisfy everyone in our picky foursome. The service was pleasant and if not super efficient they are personable. Next time in Santa Barbara, I will probably be eating at Joe's
