TAP Thai is a small neighborhood restaurant in uptown Santa Barbara at 2611 De La Vina Street. It presents itself successfully as a no frills, friendly place, mostly frequented by locals. The prices are more than reasonable; they are terrific--probably the least expensive Tahi food in Santa Barbara. The staff is extremely friendly. We ordered Tom Kha Gai, one of my favorite Thai soups, Spicy Basil Chicken and Ginger Chicken. Tom Kha Gai includes coconut milk. The trouble with TAP's Tom Kha Guy is that you can taste nothing but the coconut milk. It overwhelms the soup like a heavy cream. There are none of the flavor nuances you taste in most Thai food nor any hint of fresh herbs. Th Spicy Basil Chicken with garlic, chili, onion, basil and steamed rice crowned by an egg cooked over easy was so spicy--and I like spicy food--that once again you couldn't taste the separate ingredients and, aside from the egg, it tasted just like the Chicken and Ginger, which was also overly spicy and had no evident flavors of ginger nor discernible flavors of garlic, onion, mushrooms and soy sauce. This disappointing meal was made even more so because the servers were so nice and the prices so reasonable.
