We stayed in Haley Cottages from June 8th-June 10th. We were 3 Irish girls who had never been to Santa Barbara before. When we arrived at the cottages we were informed by other guests that we had to check in at the hostel which was a fifteen minute walk away, which is a long way away esp if you have heavy suitcases.
The three of us assumed we were staying in the same room because we were paying nearly 100 dollars a night. However one of us was suppose to be split up from the rest of us, but we could not find the other room, so the 3 of us stayed in the same room with one double bed.
The place was filthy. The bed felt like someone who weighed 600 pounds had slept in it and the floor had not been been cleaned. The bath tub was disgusting, and I doubt had been cleaned in years. It was black from mould. The lock on the door was not the safest either.
We went out of the 9th at 9am and went down to the hostel to complain to them about 3 in one room, and they informed us that we were given the wrong room number for the third person.
When we arrived back to Haley on the 9th we found that the door was not locked and when we opened the door someone had been in the room, and went through all our stuff. They took a laptop, ipod, €300 worth of cds, €2500 worth of clothes and make-up and lots more. They got in through a window high up above the kitchen sink.
The hostel were of no help at all. We called the police who told us that we were stupid paying that much to stay in such a horrible dirty unsafe place. There are lots more motels in town that would have cost no more than $10 extra and the room would have been clean, and we would have had a good nights sleep.
We ended up staying there so for one night

This is a laid-back, visitor-friendly place geared to budget tourists. Best rate in town, close to the beach. No frills, so don't expect plush carpets and flowers, but if all you want is a clean, quiet room in a good location, Haley Cottages is fine.

After seeing other prices in Santa Barbara we were shell-shocked, but then found this cute little place for $59 a night. Basic rooms, but clean and good location.

Stayed 3 nights with my fiance, the studio was nice, with a kitchen and TV, we could check our emails with the wireless internet.

Great location, near State Street and the beach, would recommend it!

This is a great place, two blocks from State Street. The buildings and rooms are a little older, but well worth the price. There's a neat outdoor courtyard area, awesome landscaping, and even a pool table. There was even cable television! Also, the staff is awesome and very helpful. It would have been nice if the person who booked my reservation had told me that 1) you had to check in at the hostel next to the train station and 2) their credit card machine was broken. But all in all, a nice place. I'd do it again.

Haley Cottages is all about a matter of perspective. If you can handle rooms that aren't exactly "clean" and people coming and going at all hours, then this is the place for you. It's at a good location off on State St, and very affordable prices compared to everything else in the Santa Barbara area. Most young travelers would be fine w/ this for a night or two (such as me), but i would not recommend it to families of people looking for a nice private room in SB. Good luck all and I hope this helps!

I was a little nervous, having read all the horrendously bad reviews, but was pleasantly surprised to find it relatively clean. The carpets were a little worn, and the towels were thin and rough. Otherwise, the cottages themselves are rather charming. There are no bad neighborhoods in Santa Barbara, just less gentrified areas. As a young woman, I felt perfectly safe walking the few blocks to downtown and the beach. The location really can't be beat.
