“Lovely spot with fabulous service”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We arrived later than we had planned and the front desk clerk was welcoming and helpful, pointing out the little wine tasting room off the lobby and giving us suggestions for a good place for dinner. (a really good Lebanese place across the courtyard)

Our room was large and beautifully decorated in tile and rustic wood, with a fireplace and good work space and lighting. The bed was very comfortable, the water pressure was good, and the layout was functional. We were in Room #3, which had a courtyard view. At night, they light votive candles around the courtyard and front entrance, and the effect is quite magical. We found the room to be quiet and we got a great sleep.

The morning breakfast was good, with great service. Our only regret is that we didn't book it for two nights! Will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We had Room #3 upstairs. It has a pretty courtyard view and a private balcony.

Slow-Travel,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am glad that your stay, although brief, was an excellent one. For those who might be wondering, Room 3 is in our Executive King category, all of which have lovely views of the courtyard or pool area.

I hope to welcome you back in the future for a longer stay where you can more thoroughly enjoy all that we have to offer.

Sincerely,

Brian Cogswell

The Spanish Garden Inn was our first experience of a Californian Inn and it certainly did not disappoint. As B&B operators in New Zealand we were interested to compare it with the B&B experience and delighted that although a great deal larger than a B&B they still managed to give the personal service that is so valued in B&Bs. The staff are delightful and friendly and of course very helpful. The rooms are luxurious, without being formal and uninviting and we certainly enjoyed the gorgeous bath and bed linens and toiletries. We loved the pool area and spent a number of hours relaxing there and appreciated the cold cordials and our friends loved the fresh cookies. As I follow a gluten free diet I could only enjoy the aroma! Providing some gluten free goodies/cereals could be something they might consider. A most delightful three night stay. Thank you.

Room Tip: We enjoyed being on the first floor with a view of the pool.

rajNapier,

Receiving a glowing review from a fellow hospitality professional is always appreciated so thank you for taking the time to share your experiences. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay.

We are planning to expand upon and improve our breakfast even further this fall and I expect us to be including a few gluten-free options as well.

New Zealand is a bit of a hike from Santa Barbara but if you do return to the US we would happily welcome you back.

Sincerely,

Brian Cogswell

My wife, son, and I stayed at the Spanish Garden Inn in Santa Barbara for one night on our way home from San Francisco. The SGI is located about two blocks from State Street and offers underground parking to its guests, making it an ideal location to walk to the many restaurants and shops SB has to offer. The friendly staff makes you feel at home immediately upon arrival. They offer snacks, a wonderful breakfast, and free DVDs with freshly popped popcorn brought to your room. We had a very nicely furnished super clean suite with all the amenities you might find at a Ritz. We surely look forward to returning in the near future.

There's a reason the Spanish Garden Inn is rated #1 on Trip Advisor, which is how we discovered it prior to a wedding weekend in Santa Barbara - and thank goodness! It is absolutely darling, with just over 20 rooms, and the staff goes to great lengths to welcome guests - smiles, fresh cookies, delicious breakfasts and day-long lemonade service, plus fresh-ground coffee in the room...I only wish we could have spent longer there.

Traveling with a young adult son, I was able to book a delicious Junior Suite with a door that closed between both rooms (and included two separate terraces) - perfect! Plus, the Moulton Brown bath products are divine...

While not on the beach, there's a lovely pool, with courtyards and flowers, a genuine oasis just three blocks off the main shopping street.

One added note: I inadvertently left my own "travel" pillow behind and the General Manager, Brian Cogswell, was in contact with me several times about it. When it couldn't initially be located, he offered to replace it - very gracious of him, and seemingly typical of the hands-on style of interaction you just cannot expect in larger, showier hotels. I will eagerly look forward to another stay here...

Room Tip: We were in Room #5, a large corner Junior Suite with huge bathroom. Only word of warning: light pour...

Thank you for the compliments and the nice review. The truth is we simply hire kind, helpful people and encourage them to be themselves.

For the record, for others who might read this review, your room was not a Junior Suite. You were in our Majestic Suite. Its our one-of-a-kind suite that is only bookable by calling the property directly. Our Junior Suites are similarly spacious but the Majestic adds the door between rooms and the second terrace among other features.

I do look forward to welcoming you back to our Inn the next time you are in Santa Barbara.

Sincerely,

This is our second visit to the Spanish Garden Inn and given our druthers,
we would never wish to stay anywhere else!
Yes, we are lucky enough to be able to stay worldwide in larger, more luxurious and better known hotels, but the Spanish Garden Inn in Santa Barbara is fast becoming our favorite of all.
The rooms, the design, the ambiance and especially the professional, personable and friendly staff who all go out of their way to be helpful are all exceptional. They come together to make this very special boutique hotel so very exceptional.

This is a reliably clean, pleasant, well run but simple hotel just off the main shopping and historic tourist areas in Santa Barbara. Some of the outdoor facilities feel a little outdated. The rooms on the other hand remain charming, spacious and comfortable with fireplace, large soaking tub and ample sized shower. It is not near the beaches and does not feel particularly luxurious but is a very good value for the price in a very pricey area.

Room Tip: Well designed with all rooms facing into courtyards or pool.

We first stayed at the Spanish Garden Inn in June 2011. I have now returned on two other occasions, most recently in August 2013. I brought my parents (two energetic seniors) on the last visit and the General Manager came out to shake my dad's hand to welcome him personally. The front desk manager and the sales manager both greeted my mom with wonderful greetings and catered to her every need. The breakfast buffet is staffed by welcoming attendants who make sure that you have more than enough quiche, coffee, fruit, and granola. I love the Four Seasons in town, too; however, they don't treat you like family returning home after a long stay away. Check them out... you will not regret it.

Room Tip: I particularly enjoyed the suite.
