“Tranquility amidst a Garden of Foodies Delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2011

Imagine Spanish Colonial charm combined with old world service and you have The Inn of the Spanish Garden. Our family of four stayed in a suite for two nights over the Memorial Day weekend. We were looking for an upscale property in a quiet, yet accessible location. One that wasn't marred by indifferent service. As usual, we found exactly what we were looking for on Tripadvisor.

Initial phone calls and emails to the property about availability were met with polite efficiency. Some places are good at that, but service, and politeness, falls off once you've made the booking. Not the case here. After 5-6 hours of road weariness driving down from the Bay Area, it was a pleasure to be greeted with genuine helpfulness.

The Suite had ample room for four adults. My son and his girlfriend took the master bedroom first night, while my wife and myself took the fold out sofa bed in the living room. We switched the next night. Due to an unusual weather phenomenon, Santa Barbara was experiencing 40 mile per hour wind gusts during our stay. Leaving the french windows open (to a deck), we took advantage of the gas fire place. Very relaxing!

The Inn is nestled in the Garden District, which is close to some fine restaurants. On our first night there, The Inn hosted wine tasting by Longoria Wine. Rick Longoria has been active in the local wine scene since 1976 and was both charming and knowledgeable. We especially enjoyed the Pinot Grigio. Should you wish to indulge yourself, the Inn sells wine by the glass or bottle.Having worked up an appetite, we didn't have to go far to find sustenance. La Playa Azul, a nice little eatery can be found through one block away. On the second night we visited Olio e Limone, an authentic Italian restaurant within easy walking distance. It's quite expensive but worth a visit.

We highly recommend this charming little Inn. It's worth the splurge.

Best customer attention and service that we have had in a long long time. Helpful, kind, and pleasant. Lots of little amenities that are nice, like the fountain, firepit, fresh evening cookies, deluxe continental breakfast, wonderful cheese plate at happy hour, fresh fruit water midday, fruit all day, newspapers, fireplace in lobby that creates ambiance. It was very quiet during our stay, beds were comfortable and I loved the french doors to the patio (room dependent). It was true spanish mission feel to the hotel, but the service was a real treat! They went out of their way to accommodate, talk or make us feel welcome.

This is a special place to stay, and walking distance to downtown and beach..it was wonderful!

Room Tip: upstairs with balcony, sit outside see courtyard

to start with it was easy to locate off the freeway and adequate and convenient parking. warm welcome and great rooms. we had a suite with a pull out beds for our kids. good food, great selection of wine and overall friendly place. 10-15 mins slow walk to the beach and about 5 mins to the main street for shops and food. overall everything works for this hotel and would certainly go back again.

My husband and I stayed here for one night during our trip down the Californian coast, we only wish we had arranged to stay longer. From the moment we arrived thte staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to assist us. We loved our bedroom - it was spacious, luxurious and tranquil. The buffet breakfast the next day provide far more choice and quality than we expected. It's about a 20 minute walk to the beach from the hotel, but it's such a pleasant neighbour hood we enjoyed the stroll. We could not fault the Inn and hope we get the opportunity to stay there again some time.

This is a fantastic little hotel in santa barbara with reasonable rates. that isn't something you can say about many places in the area.

The rooms are great - plenty of space with cute layouts. Great bathrooms and products. They have a free movie rental / dvd player in the room if thats what you want to do. A wine bar in the lobby. Free parking. Free internet. Very helpful staff.

We made a reservation last minute and they gave us the room right across from the elevator. You couldn't even tell once inside the room. Very quiet hotel with a cute courtyard where you can sit out in the sun.

The room had a private balcony and fireplace which was great.

Breakfast was included. It was a standard breakfast with quiche, fruit, yogurt, toast, coffee, milk, juice. It was all fresh though and you can sit out in the sun to enjoy it along with your free morning LA Times.

Stay here.

We planned to stay in this hotel according to the good reviews; I called the hotel and a young woman (Ivumi?) said they didn't have any double rooms (the cheapest) and advised me a majestic suite (certainly one of the most expensive), she certified me there were no other available room. some of our friends who wanted to go with us called a couple of days later, and this young woman said they had a double room available: my friend told me and I just called a few mins later, Miss Ivumi told there were no double rooms!!!!
I understood she didn't want to give a "cheap" room (not so cheap really...), and when I asked to change, she advised me a junior suite that was just 20 dollars cheaper for a suite much smaller!!!moreover, she was very difficult to understand and a little bit stubborn, I mean not providing a 'top of notch" service. If the management of this wonderful hotel read this, please ask her to be more listening and understanding the client, and not trying absolutely to give the most expensive room, saying nothing else is available, jusy after having told differently to another people!!!
so, before reserving your room, be sure you get precisely what you want, ant ask for a precise written confirmation!
this is not adequate with the quality and reputation of this hotel....

Room Tip: insist severely to get the true information!!

We are very sorry that we did not meet Mipougne’s expectations during her reservation experience. We pride ourselves on providing friendly and courteous service to all of our guests, in person and on the phone, and at the same time, matching them with the room best suited for their visit. We are a small Inn and the availability of each specific room type can change on a moment’s notice, so it is possible that the room requested was no longer available.

We continue to strive to exceed each and every guest’s expectations and work to ensure that all of our employees are knowledgeable, cheerful and confidant in handling our guest’s requests. We again extend our sincere apologies that this reviewer was not completely satisfied and hope that we have the opportunity to welcome her back in the near future!

Underground parking and close to downtown sites is a major benefit. But be sure you have a accurate map as the small city preserves its past with buildings and streets which are similar. The inn seems cramped but stylish. But the larger rooms with patios or decks are satisfying as the are a nice retreat from car-less sight seeing. Pool is small so excited children's voices can carry. Close-by mexican resturant Azul tops. Overall two nights or three enough but not for expansive vacationing. But one needs financial bravery to stay at Four Seasons for a weeks vacation.
