Great location near State St. and the beach, but the room was a bit rough.

Included an outdoor patio, but very limited parking lot. Room was quiet (especially considering it was a Friday night).

Decor could use an update, to say the least. Continental breakfast was a nice bonus.

Hotel from the outside appeared to have all of the quaint features that the photos on line said it had. My sister and I were looking for a short get away and so the Ala Mar Motel was chosen as our destination. At first we were okay with the run down interior, the running toilet, and the lack air conditioning. But once night came and we settled into our beds the bugs came out of the wood work and bedding. It was not one bug, but many blood sucking insects plus their babies crawling around the pillows and sheets, we called downstairs and had to be moved to another building around the block. Management did not personally apologize and my card was still billed for 99.00 Terrible hotel!

Our room cost us $250.We had a last minute trip to Santa Barbara and wanted to be near the beach. Made a huge mistake of not asking to see the room first. My husband and I are very easy to please, stayed at plenty of dumpy places in our years of traveling as well as some very nice places for more money. I like small family-run boutique type inns and motels as we want to support them. But Ala Mar is a disgrace to those places. Not only was the price unbelievably high for a motel, it was obvious that they have no pride in the work they do as motel owners. The place was not 'shabby-chic' or even 'beach casual'. It was a cheap $40 motel with a $250 price tag. We've stayed at Motel 6s and roadside motels that are cleaner and in better condition.

Bathroom was terrible looking, with rusty accessories, the room smelled, the bedding looked like it hasn't been washed, all the furniture looked cheap and tacky (you can get great old furniture for next to nothing in California, so it's no excuse!). and no air-conditioning. 'Continental breakfast' was waffles, boxed cereal, and awful junk pastries in plastic wrap-the kind you get at gas stations.

For so much money that they are charging, it is a terrible terrible shame that they show absolutely no pleasure in making their rooms inviting or even cozy, even clean will do! Service was completely impersonal if non-existent. For a place with prime location and plenty of customers, they give motels a bad name and remains the single black stain in our wonderful weekend in Santa Barbara.

We don't mind paying the money if it was at all worth it, but we just felt like we were robbed and pushed into a puddle.

Avoid at all costs.

Stayed once before, small problems. Both times I stayed upstairs. The internet pictures must be downstairs or another hotel. Bathroom window would not shut or lock. Needed to call management to help get heat on. Second time I knew it had "Beach Charm" old but nice. Got up to take a shower, no water. Desk manager was very nice and showed me to another room two doors down to shower. When I saw the Main manager she said "We provided you with a shower so I cannot take any money off the bill." I guess you have to check everything to see if it's working before you hand over that credit card! Could be a great place if only they would put a few dollars into it. I'm done with the Ala Mar.

Room was OK for the price. We pulled off the highway in. Check in staff was friendly and helpful. Morning staff was the pitts. The desk clerk actually yelled at a customer who took her seat at a dining table in the crowded breakfast area, We had called the same desk clerk an hour before about the wifi being out - listened to another patron complain at the desk concerning the same issue - he too received no service.
