“Great Little Inn”
Reviewed October 24, 2005

This was the highlight of our trip. We started in Napa and worked our way to Southern CA. The stay at this Inn was fabulous. Intimate, the Charley Chaplin influence, and great staff. Plus what a wonderful little town for shopping. Don't miss a little store called Objects. My wife spent two hours there and she is NOT a shopper. Overall, this Inn was just small enough and nice enough to rate a 5 STAR from me. Not fancy, but very COOL!!!

Montecito is a great little town. This is my second time staying at the Montecito Inn. We stayed there in September of 2002 and liked the quaintness of the inn. We didn't LOVE it the first time we stayed there, but thought we'd give it another chance since we heard the rooms were renovated just recenty. We just got back from a 2 night stay and here are our thoughts:

1) No A/C. Our room faced Coast Village Drive and we found it quite noisy since we had to leave our window open for the air. There is a fan in the room, but definitely not sufficient to cool the room. It's no fun going on a romantic weekend getaway when the room is hot & humid. :(

2) No A/C. Did I mention that there was no A/C.?

3) The staff was inconsistent. Although the valet was friendly and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, the front desk staff was not hospitable.

4) The breakfast is plain. Coffee, juice, and pastries- nothing to write home about and not very good. They charge you $5 per person if you want to have it brought up to your room in the morning. Uhmm.. I'd rather spend $3 at the Starbucks down the street for better coffee & Pastry.

5) The room looks worn. I can't believe they just renovated the rooms. It looks just as small, dark, dingy, and old as I remember from 3 years ago. In addition, the room is small- especially the bathroom. The shower doors had mold growing around it and the floor is an old linoleum. You cannot fit 2 adults in the bathroom. My boyfriend is 6'3", 220 pounds, and he could barely fit in the bathroom by himself with the door closed.

In conclusion, although this is a cute & quaint hotel, I just expect more for $225/nt. If in the summer, I would not recommend because there is no A/C. Not worth the $$. Probably will not stay again.

I've never stayed in a hotel in Southern California that does not have A/C at this price point. The room was too hot, even when it was only 75 degrees outside in the day. Also there was quite a lot of noise from the kitchen below even during a weekday.

I would advise not to stay on a weekend night because they often have entire wedding parties staying at the hotel and the whole place echoes footsteps, doors slamming, people laughing and yelling. I wasn't able to sleep for 3 hours and finally called down to the desk. They said that they had been getting a lot of calls and the party had been advised to quiet down. In the morning we mentioned our terrible night's sleep again and a different staff member said that that party was not as loud as their average wedding parties (which is a horrible reply and will never get me to stay there again). And he mentioned that if I had called, he would have done something about it. I did call, but apparently he was not aware that the guests of the hotel were terribly annoyed. We stayed in a suite our first night which is right on the street where the bus comes by very loudly and often. The decoration of all rooms is "early Caesars Palace" and needs some up-dating. A waste of your money.

It was a quaint, cute hotel. The room key was a nice touch. The staff is pleasant, esp. the valet. We were there for 1 night on New Year's, and the X'mas decor on the fireplace adds to the charm. The complimentary breakfast is just juice and pastries, but free regardless. Ask for the newly renovated room, quiet (Coast Village Drive side), and higher floor. I got all that I asked for. It's an old hotel, so the walls are thin and the floors are creaky. The room is cozy. Bathroom is small for 2 people, but no big deal. Great deal for the price. Will definitely come back there again during cool season.
