If you find yourself in need of crispy pigs ear , succulent halibut , or delicious duck book a table at Julienne in downtown SB.
We didnt try the crispy pigs ear but I'm sure it would be just as tasty and well done as the choices we made , on a busy Saturday evening in early January. Starting with a shared plate of charcuterie , it was the perfect way to get the appetite ready for the excellent entrees to come...I had the hanger steak (med rare) , whilst my dining partners had halibut , and duck , all beautifully served and presented....and all agreed VERY tasty. We passed on desert and chose the cheese-plate instead , a medley of 5 different sublime cheeses sourced from the best local distributors and importers of (mostly) French cheeses.....the outstanding being the soft creamy (stinky!) Epoisses.
Julienne manages to accomplish an excellent quality of food from the kitchen , in a smartly casual atmosphere , and the room has a definite buzz....which can get a bit noisy at times in the relatively small room....but thats no criticism....its an enjoyable atmosphere. Cheap it ain't , but for this quality of food , you will have to travel far to get better.

We visited Julienne as party of 3 recently and we enjoyed a 5 course tasting menu.

You have the option to design your own menu, but we asked the chef to make the selection. Our courses were 1) Charcuterie, 2) Octopus, 3) Pigs ear with 63 degree egg, 4) Salmon and 5) Duck, and we polished it off with cheese. Each course was paired with wine, always perfectly matched by our waiter. The food was delicious, full of flavour and fresh - as good as if not better than many of the top end restaurants in London.

The kitchen and dining area is open plan so it was great to watch the chef and his team at work. The husband and wife team, along with their staff, were fantastic and engaging throughout. Next time we're in Santa Barbara we will return for dinner.

Some might pick Stonehouse in Montecito; others might pick Bouchon in SB. But I'd argue that the husband/wife team at Julienne are making the SB region's best food with inventive menus backed by the best, locally-sourced ingredients.

I found out about Julienne from the NYT's 2011 36 hours in SB, as well as a tremendous amount of positive chatter on Chowhound and Yelp.

We appreciated but elected not to eat using a customized tasting menu (there's a chef's choice option as well). My appetizer (winter frisee) and entree (seared veal loin) were excellent, as was the dessert ("Nitro" Ice Cream).

We also ate at Bouchon during our stay in Santa Barbara. While Bouchon was a terrific meal and featured a more robust wine list, the menu and execution at Julienne was superior. Stonehouse - we considered going, but what's the point of paying $50-$70 for Maine Lobster and Colorado Lamb when you're on vacation in California? We're sure Stonehouse is great, but Julienne's commitment to locally-sourced ingredients generated a stronger lure.

Oh - and my wife recognized SB-native Katie Perry and John Mayer enjoying a late-night bite at the restaurant just prior to us leaving. Not that it means anything...

On our last evening in Santa Barbara,w e tried Juienne and were treated to one of the better meals in our lives! The mussels are to die for. Chef stopped by our table to tell the story of how he decided to prepare the mussels as they were that day. Everything was fresh and original, without being pretentious. A decent wine selection, featuring both local and international wines. But, come here for the food. You will not be dissappointed.

Seldom does a restaurant live up to its reviews, but Julienne went beyond. We decided on a tasting and sat back and enjoyed exceptional flavors one after another, each expertly paired with a perfect wine. This is no ordinary restaurant. I have a feeling it will be difficult to get a reservation soon!
