“Nice hotel, loved the Jacuzzi!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2006

After reading reviews and pricing hotels we picked the Eagle. The only room available was the King size with a Jacuzzi, so we splurged. Santa Barbara is very pricey on the weekends - the hotels were all booked while we were there. We arrived on a Thursday and left on Tuesday, so we got the AAA discounted rate for Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights and paid the full rate for Friday and Saturday. The room was clean, the Jacuzzi was great. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The hotel is 2 blocks from the beach in the harbor. We walked and took the trolley everywhere, so we didn't have to move the car once. Parking at the hotel is good.
The continental breakfast was cereal, bagels, mufins, danish, orange juice and cut fruit. Not bad. The staff were quick to refill the milk and juice most of the time. There was also a small basket placed in our room after the first night with 2 water bottles, fruit, chips and cookies - this was not refilled. There were also cookies in the lobby in the afternoon (around 4pm).
There are trains which run through Santa Barbara at night and blow their whistles - so if that will bug you, SB is not for you.
The room temperature was comfortable.
We enjoyed our stay at the Eagle Inn and would recommend it.

  • Liked — The Jacuzzi tub, the location
  • Disliked — The trains at night (no fault of the inn)
  • Tips/Secrets — Get the King room with the tub, be sure to hit the lobby for the cookies

We lived in Santa Barbara for several years so we knew only little of the hotels but we did know the neighborhoods. On our return visits we always head for West Beach - north of State Street - and enjoy the little side street hotels with their proximity to the beach.
A favorite, and one we've visited several times, is the Eagle Inn on Natoma. A lovely property that is perfectly beautiful inside and out also has a very friendly staff. The complimentary breakfast has very good coffee [!], a delightful choice of fruit compote, wheat cereals, bagles, pastries, toast. In other words, it's much more substantial and satisfying than the weak coffee/sugar-laden fare that often passes for a 'continental' breakfast.
The beds are so comfortable. Bathrooms tiled and lovely with excellent toiletries.
The Eagle Inn always feels like a true 'going home' whenever we visit.

  • Liked — location - room - bed - bathroom - breakfast - staff - peace & quiet
  • Disliked — nothing!
  • Tips/Secrets — Be prepared for a very cosy visit.

We stay in hotel qualities of all sorts so do not have unusual expectations. But this was a complete disappointment. We had a "deluxe king room" - $249/night + tax and could not believe how the Inn's website so greatly differs from reality.
"period furniture' = Bombay Company 2001
"extended continental breakfast" = other guests leaving their unfinished breakfast items all over the "breakfast room"
The Inn uses paper plates and paper bowls for the cereal and bagels and tiny dixi cups for juice, styrofoam cups for the coffee. Just tacky for a hotel that considers itself "intimate" and "elegant."
The room was ordinary - no different than a Clarion or Motel 6 with the tiniest bathroom. All the rooms on Bath Street get to enjoy all the traffic noise.
The place is just missing the details you would expect from a hotel in that price range. It's at least $100 over priced and to think they have raised their rates for 2007.

We stayed at the Eagle Inn for two nights and were quite disappointed in the room. Apparently there are some nice ones based on other reviews, so make sure you know what you're getting! We paid $250 a night for a room and didn't blink as we were expecting the romantic room other reviews describe, but got a normal sized stuffy hotel bathroom and blah decor. It wasn't terrible, just nothing special, similar to a Holiday Inn or other generic hotel.

There was a gas fireplace that didn't work and the armchairs were awkwardly covering it anyway. It was also very hot in the room, although it had a thermostat there was no a/c and the thermometer registered 85 degrees F most of the time, with the balcony door open (it was September with highs around 70 degrees outside and cool at night). They did give us a fan when we asked at the front desk, which made it tolerable. Continental breakfast was typical, nothing special.

Otherwise, it was clean, you could hear the train but it didn't bother us, good location. For $100 less a night it would have been fine. The moral is, take other reviews with a grain of salt and ask questions when booking!

We recently stayed at the Eagle Inn for two nights in a king room with jacuzzi tub./fireplace on the 2nd floor corner. After researching B & Bs and hotels in SB for hours, my conclusion was it was well worth the effort.

Positives:

Great walkable location from the train station. I would say ten minutes. Perfect if you don't have a lot of luggage. If you do, than that could be an issue.
Quiet, clean and safe residential location
Immaculate facility inside and out
Helpful and friendly staff - couldn't be better
Cookies and coffee out all day
Very easy walk to the main areas and beach
The sightseeing "on and off" bus stops literally right on the corner from the hotel
The room had high-end furnishings complete with red roses and rose petals sprinkled around the tub - average sized room
Coffee maker and nice toiletries provided
A/C in room worked great
Overall, pretty quiet - some internal noise, but nothing major

Negatives:

There is no elevator, so if you are disabled, ask for a first floor room
The breakfast room was too small and the continental breakfast was just average

All in all, I would not consider staying elsewhere if we ever return to SB. We priced and actually looked at other rooms while we were there, and nothing compared to this hotel, all things considered. Other places charged more or the same and were rundown. I have no hesitation recommending the Eagle Inn, based on our experience.

Stayed here on the first night of my honeymoon. Had a room with the jacuzzi. Room was cozy and decorated nice. They had rose petals on the bet and around the jacuzzi. 3 blocks from the beach in a nice and quiet area around other B&B. Excellent place, they have a little continental breakfast you have have on one of there sun porches. Really enjoyed that in the morning. ABout a 25 min walk to state street where most of the resturants and bars are.

I was very disappointed in our stay. The rooms are very dated and it looked as if someone had laid all over the bed. The bathrooms had mold and it was falling apart. It was not worth the money. The location was good but the inside was extremely disappointing.
