“A charming, historic hotel in a quiet area yet close to the Mission and State Street.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

The Upham Hotel was the first hotel in Santa Barbara. It has been updated with all modern conveniences but still has the charm and ambiance of an historic building. There is a nice patio and garden to spend time on a nice day. Louie's is the restaurant on site and serves fabulous food. Our room was the smallest and cheapest but we loved it. We had our own small patio and private entrance. The room was small but very clean and nicely decorated. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. There was a simple but filling continental breakfast and lovely sitting areas to eat in. We would definitely stay again.

Nice to be able to Walk to town, have free parking, and a beautiful setting. Breakfast was just ok, but nice to have fresh grapefruit. Had dinner at Louis' and it was excellent. Can't wait to come back.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room that's near the parking lot.

Based on a recommendation from a (very) well-traveled friend of ours, we stayed at The Upham recently. We are *definitely* going back, and soon. It was just superb on all fronts. They said they were family-friendly, and they meant it. We have three little ones (5, 3, and 7 months); often when a hotel or restaurant says they are family-friendly, and then they get invaded by three little terrors, you start to get the feeling that the hotel or restaurant didn't really mean it. This was not the case at the Upham. They thought of everything, including putting us on a ground floor (fewer stairs for us, and fewer headaches for any downstairs neighbors when our boys started to jump on (and off) the beds. They have a complimentary happy hour with great wine, cheese, crackers ... and a wonderful treat at night with Oreos and milk! Our kids were in heaven, and it felt just like a wonderful aunt or uncle's place. It is walking distance to some of the best spots on State Street (Bouchon, Tupelo Junction, the French Press). I just can't say enough positive things.

This is an old-time, but updated hotel in downtown Santa Barbara, conveniently located for many sights of interest. The hotel atmosphere is most comfortable, more like a country inn that a downtown hotel. We stayed in a king cottage with fireplace, a very nice amenity for winter, and it opens out into a central garden. Very pleasant!

Room Tip: There are 4 king cottages - 2 open to the garden and 2 are on a busy street. Choose a room overlook...

Nice place, pretty, sort of small rooms. Breakfast was very healthy but was more like a super-continental one. Oatmeal and healthy cereal, fruit, yogurt, scones, etc. (If you're looking for pancakes and bacon, there's a bunch of restaurants downtown and it is in a good location. ) The restaurant here, Louie's, is very popular and gets great reviews. And it's right there attached to the Upham. All in all it was a 3 star place, if that. Quaint but didnt blow me away or anything n

We stayed at the Tiffany Country House across the street. I think it has only 8 rooms. Our room was just wonderful. In fact, our whole stay was! We enjoyed it tremendously. First off, the atmosphere was exactly what we needed - someplace quiet and classic. Even though there were other couples staying at the inn, we rarely saw them. We felt like we had the whole house to ourselves since the Innkeeper was out for the night both nights we were there. If we needed something, all you had to do was call up The Upham or walk over there to ask. The one who welcomed us after checking in at The Upham was very friendly, and then the two ladies who made and served breakfast on the two separate mornings we there were equally friendly and helpful.

Which is my second point. Everyone we encountered was just really, really friendly. And that truly added to how much we enjoyed our stay.

As for the room, it exceeded my expectations. The window faced the street, but we heard little noise, and though it became a bit chilly in the evening, there was a small heater and a fireplace in the room for warmth. The thick blankets helped, too. The bathroom was nice with all the amenities you may need (cotton swabs, cotton balls). Best part of the bathroom, of course, was the whirlpool tub. Love!

Staying at the Country House was a reprieve from the stress of our lives back home. Being able to sit in the living room and enjoy dinner as well as the complimentary wine and snacks they leave out on the kitchen table every evening, sitting out in the garden having made-to-order breakfast (you just fill out a menu they give you if you're interested in having their planned breakfast for the next day and what time you are coming down), and having the option to walk down to State street (a five minute walk) for the noise of the city atmosphere (albeit a cozy one) made this trip one of the best we've taken.

Just wonderful. Know what you're signing up for. If you don't like quiet (sometimes eerily so), then this is not the place for you. If you're uncomfortable being greeted by a lady every morning who serves you breakfast and potentially being the only ones around for long stretches of time, then go elsewhere. But if any of the other parts of this review appealed to you, then try it out. There are other inns, I'm sure, that are cheaper, but when you're here, you feel like you've travelled back in time, in a good way.

Room Tip: Stay in a room with a fireplace. Only get a balcony if you're going to stay in the penthouse. I...

We were pretty high maintenance guests. We didn't mean to be but it seems like it was just one thing after another with us - arriving just as restaurant was closing due to massive LA traffic issues, a very sick person in our party with some special requests as a result, asking for something to be stored in the hotel refrigerator for us to take to our daughter at college, leaving an important camera part in the hotel room and asking for it to be sent. They could not have been nicer or more accomdating, meeting all our needs with a smile. As a previous reviewer stated - it is an old hotel so rooms are small, maybe a little too plain and small bathrooms but the outside and insided common areas are plentiful and really nice. No coffee makers or refrigerators in the rooms. Also, one of the buildings has a super steep staircase leading to 3 upstairs rooms. If you have trouble with stairs ask for a ground floor or cottage room. Only suggestion to management is to put a mirror in the room itself in addition to the one in the bathroom so two people can be getting ready at same time (we were in the Lotus cottage). Would like to return when weather is warmer so we can dine outside and enjoy the grounds.
