“The kids loved it!”

El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park
Reviewed June 5, 2012

Though the place was still being (re)constructed, the standing buildings and expositions give you a great sense of what it was like to live and breathe (the rooms have that aroma of adobes) during the time the Spanish and Mexican owned California. The small church is also well reconstructed, and displays colorful motifs. Overall, the kids enjoyed the place much. They also give you AAA discount ($2.50 instead of $5.00, for adults).

El Presidio is an authentic replica of most of the historic Presidio de Santa Barbara, therefore gives you a true sense of the past. If you can arrange to visit during one of the park's special events, you may be able to learn how to make an adobe brick, about the kitchen gardens of California's Spanish past, talk with a soldato, see a vintage canon fired etc. The acoustics in the chapel are wonderful so concerts are a treat. Another portion of this park is the Casa de la Guerra on De la Guerra street a couple of blocks away. It is a wonderfully restored courtyard house, one room deep wrapped around a south facing court. This form is used all over the world and is a beautiful example of vernacular sustainable architecture. Again, it's specially fun to visit during an event when the house comes alive.

The first "landing spot" in Santa Barbara (except for the Chumash Indians). Recently restored with great integrity (you'll see adobe bricks drying in the sun in the front area). If there is a "Mozart by candlelight" concert going on in the Presidio's chapel when you visit, do not miss it! Great for getting a sense of the way things were when this lovely city was first founded.

The Presidio here represents Santa Barbara in its earliest days...and some of the oldest in California. Well worth exploring our California history. This sense of history makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger and more important in the continuum.
