Owner description: This zoo with a view was once a posh estate owned by a coffee and tea merchant; now it's the lush domain of more than 500 animals representing 160 species. The pink stucco mansion that once presided over manicured lawns and gardens is gone—replaced by open-air habitats built for the less refined but still exacting tastes of giraffes, elephants, gibbons, snow leopards and gorillas. What hasn't changed is the surrounding scenery; the Pacific and Santa Ynez Mountains are just as spectacular as they were back when this was the setting for civilized galas instead of the wild antics of monkeys and meerkats.

I have been going to this zoo for over a dozen years. It's great and very manageable for children but it's also a very nice spot for adults who like to pop in and see the wildlife. Small enough to do in a few hours, lovely grounds, very nice as always.

I hadn't been there in years, and really enjoyed the day with my local sister in law and my 2 grandkids ages 3 and 4. The train ride was fun, but scenically speaking, what you mostly saw was the back side of buildings and the perimeter of the zoo with the exception of a great view of 2 lions. There was a event surrounding dinosaurs, and my 3 year old grandson is a dino fanatic. We thoroughly enjoyed it, the 2 large "dinosaurs" were amazing to look at. There was a face painter who did an awesome job. Sadly many of the exhibits were closed and many of them housed unseen animals, a problem in many zoos. The giraffe exhibit, also visible from the train, was great, and we caught a quick glimpse of a gorilla. All in all, lovely weather (surprise!! it's always lovely there) a nice day outdoors and some animal sightings. Parking is easy, admission price not too bad....we'd probably go again.

Needs updating. It used to be a lot nicer. Construction going on. Little flowers. Not as "pretty" as it used to be. Disappointed.

we have been to many zoos in the US and Europe but this one is by far one of the best. this zoo certainly proves that size isn't everything! make sure to catch the dino doc show!

We visited the zoo with our 2 children, aged 10 and 8. Had our children been a little younger we would have scored the zoo 4 stars as there was more to do for little ones. That being said our visit was very enjoyable and the zoo is maintained to an excellent level. Once you accept the concept that zoos will never provide the freedom of safari parks / the wild, all of the animals appeared well cared for. The boys enjoyed feeding the giraffes which for $6 each I thought was reasonable.
Our trip lasted 2 1/2 hours which we thought was good value for money.

Thank Nick M
