Review of Santa Barbara Zoo

Owner description: This zoo with a view was once a posh estate owned by a coffee and tea merchant; now it's the lush domain of more than 500 animals representing 160 species. The pink stucco mansion that once presided over manicured lawns and gardens is gone—replaced by open-air habitats built for the less refined but still exacting tastes of giraffes, elephants, gibbons, snow leopards and gorillas. What hasn't changed is the surrounding scenery; the Pacific and Santa Ynez Mountains are just as spectacular as they were back when this was the setting for civilized galas instead of the wild antics of monkeys and meerkats.

During our visit there was a lot of construction going on so the train was offline and several exhibits were closed. We arrived late in the day to see the "how to train a dinosaur" show and rushed to the "top of the hill" part of the zoo. The show started 20 minutes late and was truncated to because someone on the staff was missing. Our expectations for the rest of the day were pretty low. BUT, unlike most zoos I've been to, each exhibit here does an excellent job of keeping the animals visible and not hidden away. So, considering that our expectations were so low, the Santa Barbara zoo turned out to be a worthwhile visit.

An easy walk from my hotel, Inn at East Beach, I walked to the Santa Barbara Zoo to enjoy the day. As perfectly set in this California town as the red roofs it is known for, the Zoo takes you hillside for a wonderful walk with some spectacular views of the ocean and mountains.

It is a smaller zoo, but that's ok. A family will enjoy a day, folks who love zoos as much time as they wish to linger, walkers the journey and challenge, and in the end you've enjoyed something pleasant. It is hillside so this is a lot of up and down, but it offers interesting views into enclosures. Animals were typical for a zoo and they were more active than many, though the cooler Santa Barbara temps were likely the cause. Well laid out you never feel lost.

There are a number of shops to pick up a gift, I enjoyed some fries and a drink for a nice snack, typically priced, and without question I would return or if in the area, become a member.

Animals such as the giraffe have a great viewing spot: the hillside location lets you get to their eye level. Gorilla were fun to watch. The two elephants have been here a long time, but whatever the reason, they were right up close and seemed to enjoy watching people as much as enjoying their food. Penguins are a fun addition and watching them eat is a joy.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is a great way to spend half a day, or if you linger, all. Can be covered in a few hours easily - with that hillside walk to consider.
