“Slow Paced - Great Historical Spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

I've lived in Santa Barbara for 7 years and I've visited the Mission a few times. Once a year on Memorial day weekend dozens of chalk artists create amazing pieces of art on the asphalt in front of the mission. I highly recommend stopping by and watching them work if you have the opportunity.

Recently, during Fiesta weekend my mother (a 4th grade teacher well-versed on CA Missions) and I took the docent guided tour ($8 each for an adult pass) which lasted a little under an hour. The tour guide shared some interesting facts about the mission and the grounds; however for those with a background on CA history or it's missions I believe the self guided tour may be better ($6 each for adults). The grounds are beautiful and they have a well curated museum area you can walk through.

Parking is free and right near the Mission entrance. The docent tour is slow paced and the area seemed to be relatively handicap accessible. This is a great piece of CA history.

“Nice mission”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2013

We're glad we visited this mission. $6 entrance but I consider that donation to the mission :-p

Location is fantastic with mountains in the background, parks opposite and next to it and views of the ocean. The mission is also quite large and impressive. The inner courtyard was very pretty and peaceful. The church was pretty and very cool! It was almost 100F outdoors and it felt air-conditioned in the church. Very informative displays. Worth making a trip there. I'm inspired to check out more missions in other towns :-)

“Don’t Miss History Preserved in a Peaceful Setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2013

My wife and I visited Santa Barbara on business. We had some time to kill and decided on a quick visit to the mission; however, the serenity of the mission captured us and we ended up spending almost two hours on the self-guided tour, enjoying the peace and quiet of the mission and at the same time reviewing the exhibits and taking in the history of how the Spanish colonial missions impacted the development of early California.

“Stunning Mission, So-so Exhibits”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

This is definitely the crown jewel of what we've seen on the California mission trail. The gorgeous church is still operating, and the cemetery is a place to linger. I'm glad we visited.

I'm still haunted, though, by the tone of the exhibits -- native peoples are mentioned prominently, particularly Juana Maria, the woman who was the model for the young adult novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Yet, it would appear from the mission's museum that the Chumash had no civilization whatsoever prior to the conquest. It's an arrogant omission -- and one not made in other, less-spectacular missions.

Worth the visit, but recognize going in the shortcomings.

“remember your history?”

Remember learning about the Spanish missions back in elementary school? Don't miss the opportunity to visit and get the visual of the one of twenty or so missions in California.
