I stayed with a friend for one night and she was impressed of it. I have been in this motel before years ago and knew about the place, my friend was a little skeptical about staying on a Motel 6 but, since our budget was limited, she agreed. If you are going to visit Hearst Castle, this is your place to set as your base. It is not fancy and does not have over the top amenities but it is clean and comfortable. Be aware of the vending machine, the bottle of water cost $2.50, we put $5 on the machine and never got our waters. Just go to the front desk to report it and they will give you your money back without hesitation. The toilet does not have a lid so be careful since is very easy to accidentally drop your keys or phone...
Overall, don't set your expectations too high if you only want a clean place to get a shower and rest a little bit during your trip along the beautiful Californian Central coast.

This Motel 6 was originally something else. The rooms are a little bigger and are accessed by double loaded corridors unlike your typical motel 6. That said it is furnished in the the normal motel 6 fashion. The rooms are fine, maybe its a little noisier then you would like but that is not unusual for a budget hotel A most pleasant beach is nearby and the adjacent restaurant makes a decent breakfast. My suggestion is to shop the neighboring hotels and when there is a significant cost savings stay here.

Room Tip: get a room on the east side. Many guests bring pets

This location is not your typical Motel 6. The lobby is beautiful with a sitting area, and bookshelves adorned in books. Conveniently there is a restaurant/Bar right off of the main lobby. The rooms are clean, and spacious. Each of the rooms has 2 queen beds, some of the rooms even offer a microwave and fridge. The location is right across Hwy 1 from the ocean. That makes for beautiful views, and the beach is walking distance. Not to mention they have the best rates in the area. Hearst Castle & San Simeon State Beach are just 5 miles north. Cambria is just 3 miles south offering tons of restaurants, shopping, and breathtaking views & walks. They even offer a cute little shuttle/trolley that runs free during the summer months on certain days. Love it!

This is a budget chain, everybody knows it, so you will get what you expect.
Rooms are simple, yet complete. It is a very interesting location for one night if you want to see Hearst Castle and some other points like the beach with many elephants seas.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 2nd floor with a sea view

My wife wasn't expecting much of my choice of motels to stay at while visiting Hearst Castle. The area itself is along this lonely half-mile strip of motels along Highway 1. Other than that, the motel was better than expected, and the price was fantastic at $69 a night. The room, bathroom and outside pool were very clean. My wife and kids went swimming twice in the two days that we were there. My wife's style is more the Fairmont or Waldorf and I am more the budget conscious one, but let's face it, this is the San Simeon?Cambria area and if you NEED to stay overnight then this place is as good or better than any you're going to get in the area.

Room Tip: Ask to get a view of the ocean.

Originally a bit frustrated at having to book a room in San Simeon, an hour from my last-minute business trip in Pismo Beach, over the last weekend for many of summer-break & a record-breaking heatwave throughout much of Southern & Central California. Not so, after I pulled in and realized that this particular Motel 6 sits directly on California's beautiful Highway 1. When I commented on this to the check-in clerk (who was delightful and would have fit in nicely in any business class or resort environment) she promised my room would have a partial ocean-view, along with the potential of seeing some of Hurst Castle's herd of Zebra over the adjoining fence. The zebra did not opt to make an appearance, but the view turned out to be primarily ocean - a pleasant surprise.

Carpets were in need of replacement, but I suspect this is an ongoing problem with beach properties and many guests lack of courtesty and decorum. Typical signature Motel 6 lack of all the little extras, but an ocean-view room for $109/night far overshadowed the lack of the rest.

The area can not boast scenery as over-the-top-spectacular as its northern cousins, Big Sur, Carmel & Monterrey, but the strip of public beach & estuary closest to the motel are one of the loveliest I've had the pleasure of traversing anyplace else in the world. Cambria turned out to be only a three-mile drive - a charmingly quaint-though-touristy little town to the south.

I had previously only thought of San Simeon as a place to stay to see Hurst Castle, but now would not hesitate to recommend a stay at their Motel 6 as a great base for anyone on a budget wishing to experience some of the West Coast's loveliest beaches sans a sandy sleeping bag!

Room Tip: Ocean side for a generous partial view of the Pacific just across Hwy 1.

When my sister and I checked in at about 9:30 p.m., we found that our room had been used. The bed was messed up and there was a table pulled up to the powered-on TV with scraps of food left on a plate. We called the front desk and were given cards to another room, but unfortunately the manager didn't change us over in the computer, either then or the next morning, and our new room was not cleaned after we returned from a day of travelling. The explanation for the used room was that the cleaning staff had missed it, but my sister and I both thought it was used by a staff member. It's irrelevant really. We had to ask for a credit for the extremely bad service and were given a credit, but it really left us with a bad impression of this hotel.

The restaurant attached doesn't give great service if you don't choose to have the breakfast buffet and just want toast.

The area is really nice and very scenic. I would definitely visit the area again.
