“Great Location & Very reasonable”
Reviewed November 14, 2006

The first proper night's stay on our honeymoon tour round Californai didn't disappoint one bit. Beautiful views over the ocean sunset, and all at a very reasonable Best Western price. Ask for a seaview room - ask specfically for a ocean front 2nd floor room, but in the block nearest to to the road. The one right on the beach is about $100 extra but the other block still gets vey good view and is miles cheaper. They have bonfires on the beach at night, which are wonderful - particularly in May, when the temperature hasn't got up yet!

We were just looking for a moderately priced hotel where we could spend one night during our trip up the coast from L.A. to San Francisco. Located just a few miles up the road from Hearst Castle, this place turned out to be a gem! It's operated like a mom-and-pop owned bed-and-breakfast w/friendly, down-to-earth staff. Our room had a wood-burning fireplace and doors that opened onto a patio overlooking the swimming pool and ocean. The grounds are on a cliff overlooking the ocean and you can walk the paths along the sea. Definitely a pleasant surprise for the money.

  • Tips/Secrets — If you're arriving late at night, call on your way b/c the front desk is not open all night.

We would love to make this our home. Room was large, clean and comfortable. Didn't have an opportunity to use the fireplace, but definitely added to ambience. The view from our beachfront room was unsurpassed. Bonfires at night are an added amenity. Meals in the restaurant on the property were quite good. The Hearst Castle is the only major attraction in the area, which is definitely worth one or more visits. However, for us the Calavier is a great place to just kick back and relax. We're looking forward to returning.

This hotel is really worth every penny. There are some cheaper around, and we sprung for a nicer room but it was absolutely worth it. We had a giant tub/shower combo, robes, a fireplace, an ocean view, dvd player, a very large comfortable room with sofa chairs and an ottoman, and more. But really, what more do you need than a fireplace and an ocean view? If you do need more there was the excellent friendly service, the outdoor bonfires, and the perfect location right by Hearst castle, moonstone beach, and Cambria. I will absolutely return here, but until then I'll just dream about it.

Stayed here half-way through our honeymoon. Only stopped here because we ran out of daylight on our drive down route one, and seemed silly to continue. However, would have definitely planned a stopover if we’d have known how gorgeous the hotel was. Ocean-view hotel rooms all had a working log fire in the room. Hotel itself was laid out more like a motel. Fire pits were also placed in the hotel grounds, in front of the beach for guests to enjoy the sound of the sea after dinner. Food from the restaurant was lovely and reasonably priced and could have had a party in the bedroom – it was massive! Would definitely recommend a night here to others – well worth planning a stop halfway down route one to take in this delightful little village!

  • Liked — Fire pits in front of the beach
  • Disliked — Only finding the hotel by accident after the sun had set
  • Tips/Secrets — Plan a stopover here to enhance your route one experience

We stopped off here on our way back from Southern California to San Francisco. I have stayed here a couple of times before and this visit was just as satisfactory as the previous visits. Our room was quiet, clean and comfortable and the hotel is located on the ocean shore providing a very pleasant place to walk. There is a good value restaurant associated with the hotel where we had an agreeable dinner. The only negative thing to say is that there doesn't seem to be much to do in the area unless you are visiting Hearst Castle (I am not very much taken with nearby Cambria).

Going to Hearst Castle along the California coast?? This was a great find that offerred wonderful views of the ocean and very comfortable rooms. This was a really nice Best Western with a super location along the coastline. It can be seen from the Castle on the hill, which makes it a short drive to this most unusal California State Park.

Nice sized rooms with fireplaces and sliding doors that open out to a view of the ocean. Short drive into the arty town of Cambra and the base of the drive along famous Highway 1.

Don't miss staying at this location if your on your way along California's central coast.
