The Morgan at San Simeon

We are a family of four who stayed just one night at The Morgan on our journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The hotel itself is nothing special but nice enough, the rooms we had were a decent size with pleasant decor and a comfortable bed. We had road facing rooms but didn't notice any noise at all throughout our stay. The continental breakfast was quite good with a good choice of cereal, pastries, toast, eggs etc and the coffee was very good. Dining options are a bit limited if you don't want to drive a few miles down the road to Cambria but the Mexican restaurant right next door was pretty good in our opinion.
Overall a brief but enjoyable stay.

We normally stay in Cambria on Moonstone but unfortunately all rooms were booked. We decided to give this hotel a try. While it wasn't the worst place I've stayed at, the room was outdated and a little dirty. The pool is the size of a hot tub. The breakfast that is offered is bread with a side of bread. The coffee I will say was pretty good! Anyhow, I would not stay here again if given a choice.

Dear jp1291,

Thank you for your review of your stay at The Morgan. I agree with you that the hotels on Moonstone Drive are lovely, San Simeon, while a different "vibe" but just as special.

In addition to bread and locally baked pastry, our complimentary continental breakfast also includes hard coked eggs, yogurt, cold cereal and granola. Thank for the compliments on our coffee! It is indeed quite wonderful.

This is a great location for visiting Hearst castle, although Cambria would be equally good with a more dining options and a bit of shopping for after hours. Room and public areas were clean and inviting; bed and pillows were comfortable (a bit on the soft side but not from age or breakdown -- we just like hard mattresses and firm pillows). Our room was good size, and had a desk, easy chair, and a straight back chair (and king bed); the couple we were traveling with had a small couch instead of the desk. Continental breakfast was ample with great local pastries; they also had hardboiled eggs with instructions for microwaving for those who want warm protein -- that worked better than I would have expected. No elevator, but staff was quick to offer to carry bags. Only down sides: I found the room a bit stuffy for sleeping even with windows open (worked better 2nd night when I pulled the roman blind up a bit). There was a ceiling fan, but its not over the bed; and additional floor oscillating fan would be a good idea. Also, we were facing the parking lot/highway (highway noise does quiet down after dark) and a bus of young adult/student tourists arrived at 11.pm and made a huge racket -- sounded like a skate board competition was going on with a lot of shouting and talking loud. They left in a.m. and totally overwhelmed the small breakfast area and staff (and weren't very neat), so we had to wait to get coffee and eat. I don't know if its a frequent pit stop -- but if you have a hard time falling back to sleep when woken you might want to ask.

Room Tip: per my review, rooms facing parking lot rooms can get noisy if a tour bus shows up. There is no elev...

Like many people, we were here for one night after visiting Hearst Castle. We were very impressed with Morgan Hotel. We had a superior king room, large room, nicely decorated with a lovely couch under the window and an open fire place which added a great ambience. A fridge, wine glasses and a few drinks in the fridge. Great bed and good size tv and fluffy white towels and no charge for parking on the promises. Breakfast included, all in all very happy here.
It's also next door to the Mexican restaurant for dinner so you don't have to drive anywhere.

It was the perfect location for our Hearst Castle get away. The price was right and we were very satisfied with our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was very clean, the new upgrades were appreciated, the bed was very comfortable, we had good WiFi and awesome sunset and ocean views. We liked the fact that the towels had that very clean slight bleach smell. The continental breakfast was very good and there was lots of variety and something for everyone. We ate dinner directly across the PCH from the hotel at Manta Rey Restaurant. It was super good! All in all a great stay and we will be back!

Room Tip: We chose a second floor corner suite with ocean/sunset views.

We just stayed at the Morgan for 3 nights. Overall, we were happy with our stay. We were in the north building, on the highway side, but our total price including tax, for a room with two double beds, with a fireplace was $612, which is a bargain for a hotel near the beach in high season. Yes, the highway is noisy, but once the sun goes down, there are very few cars, so it wasn't an issue, even though we kept the windows open. The beach is VERY close; literally a block away, if that. Very few people on the beach, lovely. Yes, they need to do some updating, and clean some of the stains on the carpets (it's not that difficult), but you can't beat the price. I would start with the doors. The pool is small, but nice and warm, and it included a continental breakfast. The bar was set very high by our stay at the awesome Beach Terrace Inn in Carlsbad last year, so I would suggest manager & owners stay there to compare & improve their service.

Our room was called quiet, however it was noisy with the windows open because of the noise from the highway nearby. Room was very clean, nice firm mattress, more than adequate breakfast. The pillows were too soft and uncomfortable to sleep on, so we toss and turn through the night.
