This is an incredible sight, just off the main road, a mass of huge elephant seals the likes of which we have never seen before, zoos are nothing compared with this natural wonder right in front of you.

Found en route to Hearst Castle. What a great find, plenty of parking and good viewing opportunities. Wonderful wildlife to see and perfect photo opportunities.

We went there twice in our 4 days in San Simeon. They mostly lay around but they also were play fighting. I guess the real fighting starts in December.

Nature at its best. Elephant seals are huge. We stopped on our way up the Big Sur highway and glad we did. Not much to do but take pictures of these spectacular animals so you don't need to plan a lot of time.

Most people are too busy looking up at the magnificent Hearst Castle to see the turnout for the Elephant Seals. This is a must see on Highway 1. Hundreds of 5,000 lb Elephant Seals lying on the Beach and it is FREE. The seals are sunning themselves, or if the can get their massive bodies out to the sea, frolicking in the surf. A fun way to spend an hour or so. No facilities but a volunteer mans a table and will answer any questions. Donations accepted.
