I had no idea that these amazing creatures were previously near extinction, and that they have made such a remarkable come-back! It was so thrilling for our family to see them.

The Elephant Seal Rookery is app. 14 miles from San Luis Obispo, Ca. What an experience. Males were on the beach during what is termed a "catastrophic" molt. The beach is lined with elephant seals. No words can possibly express the experience. Go and be prepared to smile, laugh, and be awed by nature in action.

Friends of the Elephant Seals are on had to answer questions---look for the blue-shirted docents.

Although these animals are beautiful to behold, remember they are wild---and bigger than you!

Donations accepted on site...make sure you toss in a few to help these creatures.

If you're driving up the Pacific Coast Hwy, skip the Hearst Castle (almost vulgar extravagance) and drive just a few miles north to the Elephant Seal Rookery, near San Simeon. Make sure your camera battery is charged: These guys will keep you entertained. Yes, it may smell a bit, but I felt cleaner leaving the Rookery than I did leaving the Castle.

We stopped by here on our PCH/US1 drive from LA to SF. We'd just finished our Hearst Castle tours, so were a bit "walked out" however, wanted to see some elephant seals.

We were not disappointed! Even though the seas were mainly basking in the sand, their antics were most amusing. Some like to give themselves sand showers. Some snore when sleeping. Some take little dips in the water and then galumph back to collapse with a happy sigh into the warm sand. Some like to spar with a buddy in the waves.

You could watch them for hours! Definitely a great place to enjoy some wildlife doing its own thing.
