Our family camped here for the 2008 labor day week end. It is next to the beach and very close to the Hearst Castle. Our camp site was level and nicely shaded. The bath rooms were clean and well maintained. The coin operated shower had only luke warm water. They had good ranger managed programs on both the days we were there. It is an easy drive from here to the great beaches like Morro rock and Pismo beach.

Stayed here during our fly-drive tour of California Jul/Aug 2008. Arrived late and left early but got as far as the beach and in the sea (pretty cold!!).

The camp ground was great and the shower facilities well looked after. Beautiful location and wish we could have stayed longer.

Only problem was the water temperature in the shower.... cold (and not free).

We also stayed at Manresa Beach State Park, Point Mugu State Park (Malibu) and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park which were also great.

Sad to read about the problems that chap had with Xenophobic behaviour and that the Ranger didn't stick up for them.

To all the non-natives (US citizens), it gets cold at night!

Went camping for 3 days at San Simeon on July 24-27. First time. Went with a family of 19 for a new tradition...camping! This is the Second Annual Camping Trip for my family. We ranged from the camper elite to the novice to the "I can't get dirty" camper.
We had reserved three sites for that weekend and didn't get up there until 1:00. The rangers let us go pick out our sites and were very helpful when I came back and didn't know which ones to choose from. The bathrooms are all centrally located and it's a short walk thru the campsite to the beach. The beach is all rock and no sand. Hurtful on the feets but otherwise gorgeous waves. They were sooo big and loud and it was wonderful falling asleep to them at night.
Showers and restrooms were clean. Firewood for sale if needed.
Town was a short 3 miles from the site where there were some restaurants, mini marts and antique shops.
Overall, I would camp there again and recommend the campground.

We were in spot 46 at the San Simeon State Park for tent camping. It was windy as heck in the afternoons and early evening. The fire pits are tall - about 3 feet - so we could not stay warm by the campfire unless we stood up.

The park is about 1/4 mile from the beach - the beach was ok - more of a rough beach with small rocks and seaweed. I wished the beach was nicer to make up for the windy campground.

The positive was that the restrooms and showers were kept clean.

I would choose another campsite along highway 1 next time.

My brother and I just went camping at the Washburn campground at San Simeon, and we had a great time. The drive up from Orange County (about 5 hours) was beautiful and the campground was easy to find. We had no problems with our reservation and they were quite flexible about the specific site we wanted. The site itself was simple - picnic table, fire barrel, water spigot, and a spot for our tent - and was located near the trail to the beach, with a nice view of the ocean. There were a lot of RV-dwellers, who usually make for friendly but mildly annoying neighbors, but aside from a couple of unleashed dogs (and one generator) it was pretty peaceful.

The Washburn area is not especially close to the beach, but it's within walking distance and within earshot of the waves at night. Firewood was for sale at the campground at a reasonable price ($10 for a wheelbarrow full, about 16 pieces + kindling). A few hotels and small general stores are just a short distance north on PCH, which was convenient when we decided to make a beer run. Cell service can be spotty even on the highway, so plan your travel routes in advance just in case.

Beautiful sky at night, howling coyotes and crashing waves, Irish whiskey around a blazing campfire... does it get any better?
