Upfront...My dislike...not enough time!
ADVANCED RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED. I read this at 8 am and managed to book the 11:30 am Grand Rooms tour which is recommended for first timers. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and the guide--Pam--was awesome. She was well-versed in Hearst knowledge, welcomed and answered questions, and kept us moving seamlessly through the tour.

BE ADVISED: Stay on the gray carpet which is laid out to protect the flooring. Wear comfortable shoes. Eat a hearty breakfast prior to arrival. Once the tour completed, we were invited to meander throughout the outdoor plazas and Neptune pool. The guards are quite friendly. I finally left at 2:30--I rounded a corner and spied "one more thing"---My brain was on sensory overload.

DO NOT eat the china food at the visitor center. Allow yourself time to drive across the street to Sebastian's Store and chow down on Hearst c Cattle meals.

Second time there. The tours are fine and a must do but I really enjoy that they now allow you to wander the gardens and pools after your tours and spend as much time as you like. We brought a picnic lunch and sat outside (down below) on the picnic tables. It was great. They do have restaurants inside too.

spent 3 hours touring the castle and loved it. at the visitor centre, be sure to go to the outdoor bbq and have the triple tip sandwich (beef is from hearst ranch).

Did upstairs rooms tour this time. Grand rooms first time. The movie plays every 45 min, get there early before your tour and watch it! Very informative. Book tickets on line prior to visit! Free exhibits all around and food/wine, so plan about 3 hours for 1 tour, movie, exhibits, and food!
Hanging out at pool incredible. Kids elementary school age, and teen liked it! Also in the gift shop there are personalized luggage tags for $5.00 that are incredible! You have to check it out!

What a waste of time and money. We left knowing nothing of W.R. Hearst other than he had terrible taste. Another reviewer stated that he felt "icky" when he left. That is exactly what I told my wife on the way to our car in the very over-crowded parking lot.

We left feeling like Hearst invited celebrities and "interesting people" to perform (he demanded his guests present a "play" in costume for him) like a human zoo to compliment his real zoo. He might have brought European fineries to his "castle", but the items were stuffed, willy-nilly in horribly designed rooms. I an only imagine what architect Julia Morgan thought about his "partnership" (as the terribly syrupy movie called it) with her. We've seen several of the great homes and castles of Europe and America, but this isn't one of them.

To make matters worse, our tour guide constantly forgot major parts of his spiel and couldn't answer many of the questions asked of him.

There was not one single thread of meaningful history in the tour or the overly dramatic IMAX movie we saw. We were hoping the movie might provide some sort of intelligent glimpse of the ostentatious home's ostentatious owner, but alas, it provided us nothing more to ponder other than why we wasted our time and money there.
