Take the Marin County Civic Center tour (every Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., $5, Room 233) for a fascinating insight into the building and Wright. Bring your cameras for some awesome pictures.

The last great project of the noted architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, the Marin County Civic Center, spans two hillsides at the northwestern part of San Rafael. Seen from a distance its distinctive blue roof serves as a magnet to those interested in structural beauty. Its graceful archways guide the eye across roadways from one section of the building to the next. Guided tours with docents let one see the interior of the modern courtrooms, a beautiful library, cafeteria, and a spectacular interior, but not the county jail which is cleverly hidden within one of the hills! The building stands as a permanent photo op for those savoring architectural beauty.

The Marin County Civic Center is now over 50 years old, and while not the avant-garde installation it was in the 1960's, it's a striking and important piece of architectural history. Frank Lloyd Wright's last major project seems to grow out of the rolling California hills, and is well worth a look. Stop by the cafeteria for a cup of coffee and/or breakfast or lunch. Be sure and see the scale model of the buildings, as well as the display on Wright and the genesis of his vision. The surrounding area is also of interest. There is a lagoon, surrounded by trails and benches, excellent for picnics. The Marin Center concert hall can seat 2,000 for musical events or plays.

A visit to the Marin County Government Building in Marin is well worth your time. It was designed and the construction supervised by Frank Lloyd Wright himself. It's very modernistic and when built was far ahead of its time. It looks very "art deco". The main building houses the Courts, Cafeteria and the Marin County Jail as well as various governmental offices such as the Tax Collector, District Attorney and Assessors. Adjacent to the main building is the Marin Center where Broadway shows, musical reviews and the County Fair are held. There is a large lagoon filled with ducks and geese and has a lot of picnic areas surrounding it.

Personally, I have always thought this was a very strange building. But for fans of Frank Lloyd Wright, it is a must see--one of his last buildings, and definitely unique. We pointed it out to visitors when we were driving by, and they wanted to stop and take a tour. They were fascinated by some of the historical photos and the scale model in the hallways. My favorite part is the cafe on the top floor with an outdoor patio that includes a small fountain and some great photo ops of the building. The cafe is a bargain, too. Pretty good food options, at inexpensive prices. We were all glad we stopped for a closer look.
