This is the low down. Ever been to Puerto Rico? Shoot well, if you haven’t Then take yourself to this spot. You may just understand why people return so much. The food is on point from the chicken to tostones. All delicious

Ok so this is what’s up. We were so excited to have Puerto Rican food in San Rafael California after a day in San Francisco. We were starving. So there was the restaurant and the store that you can buy to take home. We waited in restaurant and when it’s our turn, two things. 1. The guy taking the order didn’t speak Spanish very well. I mean, really? Ok so I don’t want to be critical. 2. We couldn’t order to take home from there. After we had waited in line for three other families. They told us we had to order next door. I am like really? We waited at least 10 minutes. The least is take the darn order and pass it to the next door so they can fulfill the order. Simple concept.

So we go next door. They have items that are hard to come by in California , like café yaucono and a couple of other things. You know what, you can get it cheaper in the island but you are freaking over 3k miles away, so Pay for it if you want to have it. We ordered two café con leche, really good, wish the serving was bigger.

We ordered a service or chuleta frita with arroz blanco and pink beans, Amarillo’s, tostones, and an order of bistec encebollado, dos coco ricos and one flan de coco.

Ok,
Reality needs to set in here. The beans were soso. Actually sub Par to the worse I’ve had before. The rice was sticky (amogollao). The bistec was flavorless and hard. The chuleta was good. Both dishes came with a salad that was fresh and pretty good with the dressing they provided. I put the pique on the beans to dress them up as they were bland and basic as all hell. I ate the food as it was pretty pricey for the quality we got, so I ate it even though it was not worth the price paid for it.

My recommendation to the chef. Man you gotta go to YouTube and see some of the recipes in there for the bistec. If you get a chance go to Manolins cafeteria in old San Juan so you get a feel for true Puerto Rican food doctored for the ricans away from home and the gringos. You have a lot of work to do in the beans. Worst I’ve ever had. They were edible but lacked flavor and depth. I think you have probably been away from PR a while and need to get reacquainted with your roots. So if you are desperate for PR food and there is nothing else, go here otherwise disregard as you will be disappointed.

I'd seen this restaurant featured on Check Please Bay Area so was eager to try. There were four of us and as the reviews state, the line is long but moves quickly. We arrived at the line about 7:30 on a Sunday and had a chance to peruse the menu as we waited. There is a man coordinating the line (more on him later) You order once inside, pay, and then are seated. We ordered appetizers, four combinations, one side to share and drinks. We were seated at a table for 6 and had another patron join us. Expect this, because this is the nature of the place. All good. Once in awhile, we would remark that the line was shorter and even at one point, non-existent. The food is good but not authentic. The fried plantains are quite good. The mofongo is not what you get in PR so don't expect authentic. The noise level is terrible and you struggle to hear your table mates. The staff is quick to remove your plates once you are finished. Here is where things went south - our plates were removed, boxes provided, and then the man who works the line outside approached us, tapped on the table with his knuckles, and said that we could linger a little bit longer but that he was going to need the table. In other words, you ate, now get out. We told him that we would like to order dessert (wanted to try the coconut flan and the coconut pudding) and he said he would help us with that. Nothing happened. Another waiter approached us and we told him we would like to order dessert and he said he would help us with that. He provided a menu, we made our selections, but weren't sure if we were supposed to go to the order counter or if the waiter would take our order. Nothing happened with the waiter and knowing that they wanted to turn our table, we just left. Disappointed. We went elsewhere for dessert and coffee. Will not return due to this exchange. Surprised that this is "okay" for an employee to herd people along just as soon as the table is cleared. Guess our time limit had expired.

Our grandson goes to college nearby and this is his favorite restaurant! We always order way to much food because there is so many things we like! Service is good and people are friendly! The roasted chicken and flank steak are two of our favorites!
