Ping's is okay, nothing to write home about. Better dining options can be found on Fourth Street or Montecito Plaza.

We were habitués of Ping's when we first moved to Marin in 1994, and then started moving around to other Chinese restaurants. Friends brought us back several years ago, and we have not strayed since.

Recommended appetizers are the pan-fried dumplings, the steamed won-tons in spicy peanut sauce, and the spring rolls (light, crispy wrapper, fresh vegetables, not greasy). Our (grown) kids like the fried prawns, but not my thing. The Mu Shu Pork (or chicken or prawns) is excellent, and can be had as an appetizer, "tween" course, or main course.

Main courses we like include asparagus chicken (in season), Hunan prawns, princess chicken (aka Gen Tso'), honey glazed prawns with walnuts, string bean chicken, and Szechuan eggplant with ground lamb. Aside from the string beans, which are to die for), other good vegetables dishes are the sautéed spinach with garlic, and the bok choy with Chinese mushrooms. If snow pea leaves are available, they are a must.

Both white and brown rice are available. The latter, while not very authentic, is very Marin and very good.

We live in Novato (with plenty of Chinese restaurants) but have no problem driving south to San Rafael for Ping's. What we tend to order over and over again are the crab puffs, sizzling rice soup, sauteed string beans with chicken and the chicken chow mein.

My husband told me about this place as he works close by and has lunch there. It is easy to drive by as the facade is not very impressive and it's located in a funky strip mall close to the freeway on ramp. But once you are inside it is quite soothing and the service has always been very professional and courteous.

We went to this restaurant often on Monday nights to avoid the crowds. Not that it is exceptional, there are many mandarin-chinese cuisine restaurants in Marin County, but because it is decorated in my favorite color of blue, which I found relaxing. I had just received in Saturday's mail the current "Book of Savings - Marin County Edition" with a coupon for a free entree from Ping's. Since we went there anyway, I brought the coupon, and since I had the coupon, I ordered an extra glass of wine. When the bill came, they refused my coupon because it is a "holiday". President's Day is great, however the only people that have it off are the schools, the banks, and the post office. I worked today. So, I spoke with the owner "Paul", and he said he observes all holidays (I wonder if that includes Ski Week too) and refused to accept the coupon. We won't be going back, there are too many other restaurants to choose from in Marin County.
