Panama Hotel has nice outdoor seating and is shaded by umbrellas. You can also sit in the sun. The food is very good, especially the vegetarian enchiladas. Good salads, burgers, and a nice Sunday Brunch. Service at times can be slow, just let them know if you are on a time limit.
If you are in the San Rafael area, check it out, I believe you will be happy.

The Panama Hotel is a gem in San Rafael. Fun place to stay and a great place to dine.
Lunches and dinners here in the quaint hotel are wonderful.
It is located in an historic building (was Maria's Pueblo way back when) and is a fun place to meet friends for a meal or a drink at the bar.
There is also music some weeknights with local musicians (check the website).

Dinner in a smaller town on a Sunday can be a tough order to fill, but this is a great spot to try. It's a B&B with a restaurant, so located in a residential part of town. Interior dining area and a few tables in a covered entry area plus what appeared to be more seating on a patio.

Staff competent and attentive without hovering. For a Sunday at 8p, this place was fairly busy with couples, larger groups (3 to 5 per table) of friends, a few larger parties celebrating. The celebrations were a bit loud - all of the smaller tables were irked - and a comment to the waiter regarding the noise went without action.

Service was quick, food delicious. Tried the Dungeness crab salad on half avocado with citrus dressing ($14) and main course of salmon with roasted veggies and a lemon beurre blanc ($25). Very tasty. Lemon tart for dessert was outstanding.

Decor kind of eclectic, but that seems to be a nod to a prior owner and past history. And it seems to work.

The Panama Hotel is really unique in so many ways - location (residential street), setting, the way the restaurant is set up, etc. They have wonderful salads as meals, and the fresh fish was wonderful. It's really a cozy corner of a place and it made you feel like you could be in Panama, or some other country for that matter. Really a neat place, and worth finding if you're in the San Rafael area.

If you want to be in a setting where you almost feel like you could be on your own front porch( summer dining seated in a big wicker chair on their front porch) where you can linger as long as you please .. Or in a sunny patio at any time of the year or in the main dining room which is full of ambience... Then come for amazingly delicious fare at the Panama Hotel. It's a little gem tucked away on a residential street since the first quarter if the 1900's!!
