Mario De Paola and Angelo Cucco, part of the team of owners at Sapore Italiano in Burlingame, took over what had been Buon Gusto Pizzeria and transformed it into a lovely, intimate, white tablecloth establishment. They opened in May, 2013, with a good following which has kept this place busy; you'll want to make a reservation on a Saturday night.
We love the Insalata di Arance, a take on the traditional Sicilian Blood Orange salad. Here it is arugula tossed with oranges, fennel and citrus dressing which my husband and I shared. He ordered the Pappardelle al Sugo di Agnello, homemade flat pasta and lamb in tomato sauce. The lamb was cooked tender and the tomato sauce flavorful without being too acidic. I enjoyed the Guazzetfo di Cozze, sauteed fresh black mussels in a light, spicy tomato sauce and was happy that it was not so spicy as to overpower the mussels. For dessert my husband chose the Zabaglione al Marsala which to my taste, could have used a lot more Marsala, but that is my palate.
They have a moderate wine and beer list.
Mario and Angelo alternate cooking duties and we're never sure who is behind the stove until they come out to greet and thank their customers for their patronage. They let you know that you are a valued customer and they appreciate your visit.
