A proper tea room this was not, and a $28.00 per person cost is over the top. The food was Denny's quality, with a 5 star price tag. Tablecloths were the wrong color, cheap silverware and cafeteria quality cups for tea. The tea was good but not much else.

I had the brisket sandwich, and it was great. Asked where to put a bottle for recycling, and found out that they sort everything in the garbage cans at the end of day.

I always try to reserve two or three weeks in advance for a weekend lunch at this tea room. All our guests have raved about the experience of dining in the pretty, pastel-decorated restaurant. They love the small scones the servers bring out first. I encourage them to try at least one small sandwich from a buffet selection of sandwiches including egg salad, salmon, chicken salad, and ham. The sesame peanut cabbage salad is a hit among several excellent salads. The desserts are terrific - the tiny chocolate cups filled with chocolate mouse and the lemon bars are my favorites.

Our reservation, made only a day in advance, was for Saturday, January 12, 2013. The time was 2:15 p.m.; the only time available. We were on time and so were they.

Now, you probably imagine a tea room having a quiet atmosphere with tea sandwiches and pastries served on a tiered tray. I know I did. WRONG! This is actually a buffet feeding frenzy. The room is small and tables are close together. A square buffet station is in the center. You serve yourself. The tight quarters and several small children made the room noisy. Furthermore, staff was too busy to clean the messes made by toddlers whose parents allow everything to go on the carpet.

After being seated our server advised us of the tea selections and we ordered the tea. It was then up to us to get our food. The problem is with the feedbag mentality; the staff was unable to keep the buffet adequately supplied. We made an initial trip, but some of our preferences had run out. Being as hungary as we were we took other selections and had to keep going back as foodstuffs were resupplied. Early on we asked for a wine list and were told they had one and would bring it; we never saw it. Cut fruit was excellent and at the peak of ripeness. Tea sandwiches, except for the salmon, were dry. All together five trips to the buffet were required to have a sampling of each item.

There is a better solution for a meal or snack at the Huntington. Around the corner from the tea room is a cafe. Ready made salads are fresh, soups are good and deli style sandwiches are made to order.

We won't be using the tea room again.

My daughter and I have always had the tradition of doing High Tea together, so this year we decided to initiate my granddaughter into the tradition by taking her to the Tea Room at hte Huntington Library and Gardens. The setting for the Tea Room is fabulous - in the middle of the Rose Garden. It's just $28 for tea with a very expansive buffet of sandwiches, salads, cheeses, savories and pastries. Try it with your "girls"!
