“Try their spicy kitchen meal.”

I don't know about sushi there, but I do like their spicy tofu soup. It's great! Rolls there didn't look really good to me but their kitchen foods did. If you like spicy stuff, they have 3 or 4 things spicy you can try :)

“worst dining experience EVER”
Reviewed July 24, 2009

if i could give a 0 rating, i would. tonight i was subjected to the angry ranting of a lunatic waiting for his takeout order. for his $80 order, the management (yes, the owner was present) subjected the entire restaurant to a 15 minute tirade about hate and racism. nobody lifted a finger. this is not the kind of restaurant where the management protects its patrons. go at your own risk.

“A good place for Fusion rolls and raw fish!”
Reviewed May 15, 2008

Sumo sushi is one of my favorite places to eat in San Luis Obispo. The last time I went in, I ordered a spicy chirashi (rice bowl + variety of raw fish + spicy Korean sauce), and it was pretty good. The restaurant has a simple and clean environment, but the noise level can be quite high during busy time.

My friends ordered some "special" rolls, which are basically fusion rolls. Sumo has about 30+ of these special rolls, and they are indeed special--some of them are deep fried, baked, no-rice, and vegetarian rolls. Also, quite a few rolls come with 2+ different types of raw fish on top. However, many of the rolls' inside, I feel, are filled with imitation crab meat, but some of them contain raw fish as well.

They also have some of the more traditional cut / hand rolls, which are the ones I prefer. (the fish is quite fresh!)

The food is not expensive and all the dishes look pretty nice. They also have Japanese beers like Kirin, Asahi, and Sapporo, and hot / cold sakes as well. =)

Oh yeah, the price is also not bad--special rolls are about $10-13 while cut rolls and hand rolls are $5-6 each.

The servers are nice, but it seems like many of them are still trainees and aren't very knowledgable about the menu items.

Overall, the restaurant is nice and I like it.

“Top 5”
Reviewed March 25, 2008

Arguably one of the best Sushi places on the Central Coast, I often each lunch or dinner here twice a week. The wait staff is quite good and the sushi chefs like to send out appetizers to tables, their compliments. Prices on rolls are average, and other menu items are equally delicious and affordable. I'm quite obsessed with the Hot Night roll (one of the best I have ever had), the Pacific Roll, Firecracker Roll and without a doubt their house salad. The ginger dressing is out of this world and for a side that costs $2 I wouldn't pass it up. Sumo, hands down, has the best Lunch specials imaginable. For $10 you can get miso, side ginger salad, a cucumber, a spicy tuna and one other roll I am forgetting at the moment. Crazy! Or my personal favorite is the chef's special, at lunch for $15 you get miso, side ginger salad, six maki of the chef's choice and a six piece cut roll of your choice. Sumo is wonderful all around, the only downside is that they HATE to split checks more than twice, so make sure to be cash in a large group.
