We were only spending one night and didn't care that the property was located in a shopping mall. Actually it made it easier to go to the supermarket for snacks for our kids (ages 3,5). The staff was very friendly. When my husband commented that the pool closed earlier than other locations, the manager said that ES was in the process of renovating all the fitness centers/pools and that once they were renovated, they would be open 24 hours a day. We didn't eat the breakfast. We have stayed in 3 ES hotels. We really liked two (other was near the SF airport), but the one in Buena Park was disguisting. It seems as long as the ES you stay at is new or newly renovated, you get a great hotel for the price.

We stayed here on 7-6-06 and had a good experience. The hotel was hosting their annual LA - SF Car Collectors convention and the collectors display their cars right in the huge hotel parking lot. It was very cool to see all of the cars from the different eras.

The room was huge and very clean. The decor was perfec, the buffet breakfast was great and included many fresh fruits. The strawberries seemed to be the size of golf balls and very sweet.

The hotel is in a nice neighborhood, just off the freeway, near a beautiful park. I'm a runner and the front desk knew exactly where I could run, just a few blocks from the hotel lot. The park had a nice pond and a huge gathering of ducks, geese and other water fowl I'm not familar with, so my kids and I went back there after my run, with some bread pieces to feed them.

We passed on the managers reception and drove a few miles to downtown Oxnard which had a farmers market going on. They have that every thursday night and it fills the streets with many people. You can tell they rehabbed a bunch of storefronts and there were many outside seating cafes.

This hotel was the perfect place to stay, halfway between LA and my final destination, San Francisco and I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

PROS
-big rooms/suites
-free cocktails, snacks and excellent hot breakfast
-ample parking
-comfortable beds
-very clean

CONS
-bad location - not really in San Luis Obispo, it's outside of the city by the Madonna inn, inside a strip mall and adjacent to a very noisy 101 freeway.
-Wireless internet access did not work reliably. Staff had no clue about it. careful if you are on business.
-not the nicest looking embassy suites
-pool is not very nice-indoor-over chlorinated

SUMMARY
there has to be better places to stay in SLO
the location is absolutely terrible unless you like staying in a shopping mall parking lot right next to the freeway and away from the town. the rooms were great though and the free drinks and food are a plus.

I stayed at this hotel for one night on the way up to the Bay Area and it was a real mix of good and bad.

Good points:
We checked in really late (aprox 10:30 pm), and the staff was very friendly.
The suite was large enough to accomodate my husband and I and 4 children, which is rare.
They had a complementary buffet style breakfast with omlet bar that was the best I have had at this level of hotel.

Bad points:
I got stuck in the elevator for about 15 minutes with my scared children. Apparently it was not the first time according to the maintenance man.
The bedroom smelled of cat urine but we had already unloaded all our lugage and after the elevator ordeal we didn't even attempt to switch rooms.

From the moment we checked in we experinced perfection. Located in central San Luis Obispo, the Emassay is the perfect beginning venue for any event. The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms very comfortable, and the complimentary FULL breakfast was a real treat. If you go to SLO, go to the Embassy!

Our room was quiet, clean and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent and at
the evening cocktail hour they even had board games set out for the kids. I would
absolutely stay here again. (My room was not in the 240's)

I've only stayed here one night and was thankful for the Suite layout, as we were pushed out of the ballroom at midnight and everything in the hotel and surrounding Madonna Road area was closed up at 11 pm. So we all raided our mini-bars and met back in our suite!

Why? Because the only bar they designed for the Embassy Suites was in the middle of the Atrium lobby and the crowd noise would rise throughout all levels of the hotel. Thus they close the Lobby Bar at 11am. And the closests bar and grill on the same side of Madonna Road is Applebee's. They too close at 11 pm. Across the Road from this Madonna Shopping Center is the famous Madonna Inn. It too closes the ball in its ballroom/dinning room at 11 pm.

This town is short of decent hotels. All the downtown hotels closed or were turned into Senior Housing (Anderson Hotel). There is the 2-story Garden Street Inn downtown, and then up on Monterey Street you'll find quite a few places on the old "motel row". The Apple Farm, Inn at San Luis Creek (formerly Morgan's Mansions), Holiday Inn Express and some of the more popular chains, (Quality Suites, Best Western, etc.)

There is talk of building a couple new hotels in the popular downtown. It's hard to beat San Luis Obispo for just walking and shopping. The new "Taste" across from the County Court House on Monterey St. serves individual tastes from neighboring Edna Valley and Coastal wines. Two new restaurants across from Taste will allow you to bring a bottle of any wine you buy at Taste and not charge you a corkage! (They are Koberl at Blue and Plazza Giusseppe--I recommend both.)
