Description: Since 1980, the Rizzo family has been serving authentic Italian cuisine in San Luis Obispo's Historic Railroad District. Enjoy homemade pastas, steaks, and seafood made from the finest local ingredients--classic dishes like Osso Buco with Saffron Risotto and Tortelli di Zucca. From a vintage Italian bike hanging from the bar ceiling to the Murano glass chandeliers and Tuscan murals, Café Roma is a celebration of what people love about Italy. The garden patio, full service bar, and elegant dining room are popular destinations. Café Roma accommodates many special occasions and business functions with its private dining options and banquet room.

For many of us in San Luis Obispo, this is the favorite restaurant in town for special occasions. I would recommend that people check out the specials board outside unless they are able to remember all the choices the waiter shares with you - I can't. Reservations are usually needed and easily done online. The food is excellent and there are choices to satisfy everyone. Two of my courses last night were a beet/avocado salad with gorgonzola cheese and for dessert a lemon/goat cheese gelato, both of which I loved.
The owner and staff do an extremely good job. The only downside last night was the noise level. Other times when we've been there it was quieter, so maybe the Father's Day crowds are a bit noisy.

When the last bite is as good as the first you know you have struck gold. Cafe Roma is indeed a restaurant in the 4 star group. We were greeted as we walked in the door and shown to out table right away. Menus and bread were served and we had a great time reading all the items on the menu.

The food was out of this world to say the least. I recommend Cafe Roma and will return.

Our party of four arrived at 6:30 pm for our reservation. No official greeter but finally seated by our waiter, Marcus. It took 30 minutes before our order was taken, another 30 minutes before our appetizers arrived, and another 30 minutes before our dinners were served. Upon our query, Marcus informed us that there were 3 large parties being served at the same time, with 2 of the groups in the main dining room and the other downstairs in the banquet room. One of these large groups was directly next to us in the main dining room and the noise from their table dominated the entire room to the extent that our table could not carry on a conversation without yelling and even then it was difficult to hear above the din.
We finally asked to speak with the manager, Mr. Marco Rizzo, I have never met a manager less concerned with his guests comfort. No apologies were offered and Mr. Rizzo was very defensive, saying that he/they never knew when there would be large groups at the restaurant and "that's just the way it is." But it was obvious that the banquet tables had been set up ahead of time, so obviously these large groups were expected.
We asked to be moved to a quieter table for dessert, and that our dessert be comped for our unpleasant dining experience. This was agreed to and so we placed our orders. After the orders were taken, an embarrassed waiter returned to the table to say that only one of the desserts would be complimentary. Seriously?! Make an offer and then rescind it after we place our order???
While we do not dispute the quality of the food, we expect a restaurant of this stature (and price) to be more concerned with all of its guests' comfort. We ordered complete dinners, with appetizers and wine, and expected to spend a couple of hours over our meal with good conversation with our friends. Our expectations were not met by a long shot.
As a note to the manager, this restaurant is not configured in such a way to allow for banquet tables mixed in with small table seating in the main dining room. Since the restaurant has a banquet room downstairs, that is where the large groups should be placed, where they can make noise and move around without disturbing other diners. We were looking forward to dining in an upscale restaurant with pleasant surroundings and ambiance and instead it felt as though we were eating in a cafeteria.

My wife and I have eaten here many times, both lunch and dinner. We have never been disappointed. The food is excellent as is the wine list, the ambiance very pleasant, especially on the patio for lunch, the service expert and friendly, the owners very gracious. This is where we go for special occasions and for relaxed lunch with friends. I'm looking forward to my next meal there.
