I'm not a fan of chain sandwich places, so I approached Mr. Pickle's with a bit of apprehension. Their menu was surprisingly large, the prices reasonable, the place very clean, and the staff friendly and fast. You can eat there or take away, and there are tables both inside and outside, so you can take advantage of the lovely SLO weather. In fact, I went the first time because I asked someone eating outside how the sandwiches were, and they said, "Great!" For $7.25, I ordered their pastrami (reuben) sandwich. Reubens can be very sloppy if the bread gets soggy, and frequently the pastrami will be very fatty. Not here! The sauerkraut was crisp and tangy, the bread held up well, and the pastrami was very good quality. For under $7, my friend got the three-level BLT; we weren't as impressed with it--the bacon seemed pre-cooked and was thin and very dry, which diminished the bacon flavor. The three layers of bread made the sandwich dry--it would have been better as a regular sandwich. But the lettuce was crisp and the tomatoes seemed ripe, and it was still better than a comparable chain-shop BLT. The price included a drink and chips, and they offered a free cookie (I declined). Portions are good-sized, and it's much better than fast-food. The staff was friendly and fast; they were willing to customize the sandwich if we liked, and while there were definitely college-kid staff, the owners were there and working, a big plus in my mind. They helped prepare our sandwiches and they checked with us as to our satisfaction. Also, someone came and offered to clear our table for us. I'll definitely go back!

I stopped by the Mr. Pickles in SLO for lunch and ordered the Tom Turkey (turkey, bacon and Swiss) on a wheat roll with lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayo. I must say, it was very good and very filling. The service was friendly and efficient. I came to find out that there are a bunch of these places all over No. Cal. I’ll be in Dublin and Sacramento in the next few weeks so I know where to go for lunch.

My first visit... Wow!
I had the club sandwich, and my business colleague had the chicken salad sandwich... both, with potato chips, a drink, and a VERY GOOD chocolate chip cookie, that was given to us ( I think) were fabulous... The place was neat and clean, and what was really a nice surprise was the friendliness of the staff... it wasn't just a polite "hello", but they actually conversed with us as they made our sandwiches... it was refreshing. We sat outside on the Santa Rosa street side ( a little noisy, but, hey, it is right next to four lanes of traffic). They brought our food out to us.
Parking is plentiful in the large lot behind the restaurant (this is the old KFC). I'll be back.
