“A great past-time experience”

Sunset Drive-In Theatre

My fiance had never the opportunity to visit a drive-in, and it was a different experience for her for sure. I rated excellent mostly because I hope this business survives, as it is such a great time and experience and not expensive at all. It helps if your car has a decent radio system, but honestly the experience is just fantastic. The locals tell me that during the summer months, folks have BBQ and beers while watching the show. I'm jealous.

Sadly Drive-In Theaters are hard to find now-a-days but we are lucky to have one in San Luis Obispo. It is a great way to see a movie and you get 2 movies for less than you would pay for 1 movie at the normal theaters. Fun date night and great in the summers.

Young families, high school and Cal Poly students keep San Luis Obispo's historic Sunset Drive-In Theatre running with first-run movies. Located on Elks Lane (formerly Portuguese Flats Rd.) at the northbound Prado Road Exit. (Southbound drives take the Madonna Road overpass to Higuera Street and turn right on Elks Lane toward the Elk's Club. Sunset features double features. The owner also runs the Fair Oaks Theatre in Arroyo Grande on Grand Avenue. So he is truly a film buff. He even restored the "Sunset" neon that faces the highway. This is a must for families that can't find a babysitter. But don't do what we used to do. Hide friends in the trunk of your car.

What's not to love about that somewhat sleepy experience of our youth in what is as far as I know the only still operating drive-in in California (if you know of another, write about it!). Inexpensive, mostly PG rated double features and an unhurried atmosphere make this a fun night to relive that outdoor screen viewing memory!

Take your kids so they know what a Drive-In Theatre is! Remember the double-features? You get them here! Fun place. If you use your car battery in AUX mode to listen to movie thru your radio, rather than the outside speaker you might need a Tow Truck. Been there; done that! Lots of tow trucks charging batteries after the movies.
